Theodore Horwitz Obituary

Theodore H. Horwitz, 71, of Sunset Beach, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was surrounded by his loving wife and devoted daughters.
Born in Gloversville, N.Y., Ted attended the University of Rochester where he met his beloved wife, Crystal.
After attending Cornell for his master's of public health and master's of hospital administration degrees, he moved to Middletown, Conn., to become director of planning and subsequently, vice president of Middlesex Memorial Hospital.
Ted went on to lead an illustrious, and oftentimes controversial, 17-year career as president and CEO of MidState Medical Center.
Regarded as a visionary, he ended his career with the completion of the state-of-the-art facility in Meriden, Conn.
Ted's passion for golf and fishing led him to Sea Trail Plantation in Sunset Beach, where he and his wife Crys ultimately retired in 1999.
He loved watching the New York Giants and was a huge Disney fan, both of which earned him the nickname "Grumpy" Grampa by his grandchildren-an affection in which he reveled.
He was predeceased by his son, Teddy; and his parents, Reina and Charles.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Crystal Martin Horwitz; daughter, Reina Horwitz Selby and husband Stephen; and grandchildren, Sara and Anna; daughter, Anya Horwitz Lyons and husband Patrick; and grandchildren, Jack and Grace; granddaughter, Alexandra Horwitz and her parents, daughter-in-law, Cindy Horwitz and Danny Sullivan; brother, Richard W. Horwitz and wife Sandra; and nephew and nieces, Marc Horwitz and wife Lisa, Stacey Horwitz, and Ann Cox; sister-in-law, Pam Racow and husband Bill; and nephew, Adam Racow and wife Lessa.
A memorial service will be in Meriden, Conn., at a later date.
An online guestbook is available at www.dignitymemorial.com/coble-ward-smith-funeral-home. Memorials may be sent in memory of Ted to MidState Medical Center c/o Development Fund, 435 Lewis Ave., Meriden, CT 06451 or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. The product of his vision, determination, realism, and sense of humor shine brightly today in the middle of The State!
But, for me, that bright shining is eclipsed by the memory of his passion

Crys,

I hadn't seen you and Ted since graduation, but I will always remember working with him on the many shows that we both spent time on that would probably have been better applied to our studies. I'm really saddened to learn of the loss of someone I considered a great friend and colleague.

To the Horwitz Family:
To have had the opportunity to work for and with Ted was truly an honor and a priveledge. A visionary yes, but also someone who was grounded enough in the present to provide true leadership for today and tomorrow. I will cherish the years I worked for him and my thoughts and prayers will be with you.
Sincerely,
Norm

Sincere sympathy from someone who worked with him at Middlesex Hospital when he was vice president. He was a visionary who energized everyone around him. We were all at a loss when he moved on to become president of MidState Hospital. May God bless his wonderful family, and may his soul rest now with the Lord.

Crystal and family: Ted was a kind, thoughtful and very able man. He navigated the choppy waters of healthcare with wisdom and determination. He saw the future and headed toward it. He made a huge difference in keeping medical care and thousands of jobs in Meriden. Without his leadership Midstate Medical Center would not exist. Remarkable man.
