Former Associate Deputy Director of CIA
Theodore G. Shackley, 75, born in Springfield, MA and raised in West Palm Beach, FL. He passed away in Bethesda, MD, December 9, 2002. Theodore G. Shackley was a 28 year veteran intelligence officer, and had spent 17 years living or traveling in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He progressed through the ranks of the Central Intelligence Agency as a recruiter and handler of agents and became CIA's senior officer in places like Miami, Berlin, Laos and Vietnam. Mr. Shackley ran more big stations in times of crisis in the post-1947 era than any other officer. Prior to retiring in 1979, Mr. Shackley was CIA's Associate Deputy Director for Operations under former President (then Director of CIA) George Bush and was responsible for worldwide foreign intelligence collection, clandestine counterintelligence and covert action. He held a number of foreign decorations and three times was awarded the CIA's highest decoration, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal. After retirement, Mr. Shackley founded Research Associates International in Maryland. The firm specialized in risk analysis, threat assessments and executive protection for firms with interests in oil or international trade. Mr. Shackley was also an author, and in addition to numerous magazine articles, wrote Third Option, which is an American view of counterinsurgency operations. He is a co-author of books titled Are The Target , and the recently released book You Are Still The Target which explains to corporate executives how to cope with terror and crime. He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel, his daughter Suzanne Shackley and his grand-children Carson Schmidt and Theo Schmidt. Mr. Shackley will be buried in West Palm Beach, FL.
