Joe, I interviewed you by phone two weeks before you died for my 1985 World Series book, "Interstate '85." I have thought about you every day since your passing, and wish so much that you had lived longer. I know you wanted to read it so much. I am proud to say I am rapidly closing in on finishing it, and I will submit it for publication well before this year is over. I will dedicate it in you and Merrill's memory. You two deserve it. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Beckwith family during this time of sorrow . I have known him since I was a kid . We played little league ball together. He will be sorely missed.

We knew Joe from the time he was a kid, spending his springs and summers on Auburn's and Dixie Youth baseball fields. John worked for Mr. B. for about five years and talked about Joe every day. Mr. B, as he was fondly known, was a proud daddy.
