Historic Baker Funeral Home Inc. Obituary

Thomas Madison Bruton Jr. was born on December 16, 1928 to the parentage of Rev Thomas M. Bruton Sr. and Callie Smith Bruton in Corsicana, Texas. Due to his father being a Superintendent of the Methodist Church they moved around the State often, which meant Tom attended multiple schools in Texas. Thom was a graduate of the historic L. C. Anderson High School in Austin Texas. After High School he continued his education at Samuel Huston College where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He was a member of Beta Zeta Chapter and Beta Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and a member of Most Worshipful Prince Hall Masons.

In 1959 he met the love of his life Alma Dupree and on July 22nd 1960 they were united in marriage. To this union two children were born.

As a child he grew up predominately in Austin Texas in the United Methodist Church under his father Reverend Thomas Bruton Sr.

Thom chose the path of educator in the Fort Worth Independent School District. He retired after 38 years of service in educating children. He continued to do substitute teaching years after he retired. Thom served in organizations throughout the city including the Fort Worth Jazz Society, the Fort Worth Classroom Teachers Association, and the National Education Association.  He volunteered for Meals on Wheels for twenty years, and he was a Sunday School Teacher at Saint Andrews UMC.

In his leisure time he enjoyed activities such as playing in a Jazz Quartet where he played the piano. While relaxing at home he would either be listening to jazz music or playing the piano or watching Crime Dramas on TV. He also enjoyed playing Bridge, that kept his mind sharp and playing Dominoes.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, his son Kevin Bruton (Andrea); daughter Tholma Bruton; granddaughter, Brittany Smith; great-granddaughter, Isabella Marsaglia; nephew Javan Dupree (Jennifer); nieces, Brenda Cregler, Melanie Faye Green, Adrian Williams; great nephews Anthony Cregler, Jr. (Joi), Javan Dupree Jr., Jamal Dupree, and Alexander Williams; great nieces, Felicia Edmon and Sonya Larson; three step-grandchildren Ekeila, Tristen, and Zachary and a host of other relatives and friends.

Not sure what to say?

It should say something when a 57-year old can still remember Mr. Bruton as his 4th grade teacher. He was my favorite, and I´m not alone. Mr. B.

Mr Bruton was my 4th grade teacher at JT Stevens and I loved him. What a great man!!!! What a life he had. Praying for his family.

Just learned of the passing of Mr. Thom Bruton. One of the greatest and sweetest men I have known. I know you are joyous to be reunited with your sweetheart, Ms. Alma who is lovingly remembered. Knowing this eases my sadness. Sending my deepest condolences to Bruton (Kev), Missy, each family member, friends and students. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May the peace, comfort and strength of our Father be yours.

So sorry to hear. Mr. Bruton was one of my fourth grade teachers. He was both kind and stern and I learned a lot that year. And helped inspire me to be a teacher.

Mr. Burton was my art teacher at Kirkpatrick Elementary in the late 60´s. Was a great man. To the family I offer my sincere condolences .

Hello kevin. I am sorry to hear that your father has died. May God continue to Bless, Comfort & Strengthen you and your Family now and always.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr. Bruton was my 4th-grade teacher (all-time favorite teacher) called me on Christmas day to thank me for a gift I gave him. I never forgot that.

Thank you for being a great teacher, my son Randy Thompson was in your 4th grade class at Stephens Elementary in Wedgwood. I think the year was 1974.
