Thomas Eakin Obituary

Thomas E. Eakin

08-16-2016

Tom E. Eakin joined his wife Jeanne of 57 years in eternal rest On August 16, 2016. Tom passed peacefully in his sleep three months shy of his 102nd birthday. He is survived by his son Stephen Eakin of Reno, Nevada and daughter Judith Metcalf of Corpus Christy, Texas. He was blessed with two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and one great great grand daughter.

Tom was born in Detroit, Michigan but raised in Santa Monica, California. After graduating from UCLA Tom became a Hydro Geologist for USGS and traveled the world assisting and developing water resources for both above water and groundwater concerns in many foreign countries abroad and North/South America alike. During his world travels he and his family called Washington D.C. home, but his love for the Western states brought him to Reno, Nevada. He worked for USGS 30 years publishing many articles that are still being utilized as a rich resource for the on going ground water issues we are still plagued with today.

After retirement he and his wife Jeanne often chased Tom's wanderlust and joy of travel taking multiple cruises that took them on great adventures throughout the world. They settled in the Sacramento California area until Jeannie's death in 2000, and moved to Reno to be close to his son.

He loved to Golf and enjoyed the Golf Channel when playing became too difficult to do anymore. So it is fitting we are planning to have a celebration of life event for Tom at the Washoe Golf Course September 9, 2016 from 5:00-7:00. Come join us and swap stories and memories of this great man. Tom left us as graciously as he Iived. He will be missed.

I had heard, and seen, that name so many times during my almost 2 decades with the USGS. it was amazing and an honor to finally meet him a few months ago. I was shocked when he said he was 101 1/2 years old!
A life well-lived.

My sincere condolences to your family. May God "who comforts us in all our trials" (2 Cor 1:4) comfort you and your family at such a difficult time. I know God will help you to endure because he cares for you (1Peter 5 :7).

Truly a pleasure, just having met Mr. Eakin, but following in his footsteps throughout numerous remote valley's of Central Nevada in the pursuit of Hydrology. This was an honor.

Nothing better than a great day at the beach

Leslie Hess

Wow, life won't be the same without him, but I strongly encourage everyone to really "celebrate" his life, as he would have encouraged all of us to do. I will so miss all the great talks we had, the life experiences he shared with us and taught us. Each time he came to visit, I became a better person for the life memories he shared, the compassion he showed, and funny stories he had from his past. He was a man that loved life, his family and friends, and a great glass of wine! We miss you Granddad but I promise you we toasted in your honor at the beach you loved to join us on.
Love Ya. Leslie

My Granddad was an amazing man! He visited us in Corpus Christi May, 2015 and I was able to take him out on the golf course. He pitched and putted, and at 100, was much better than me! I'll miss our conversations, and will always look back and admire his great stories.
