Thomas Howell Obituary

HOWELL, Thomas Gordon "Tommy" 74, passed away August 30, 2022. Tommy was a fun loving father, husband and granddaddy. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Julia Howell, and his wife of 47 years, Gloria Roberts Howell. He is survived by his children, Julianne Frost (Jason), Elison Lafferty (Patrick), and Tommy Jr. (Ashley) along with their much loved grandchildren, Cole and Clementine Frost, Sam and Lily Lafferty and Charlotte Howell. He is also survived by his three siblings, two sisters-in-law and numerous nephews and nieces whom he adored. Tommy was born November 18, 1947 in Bartow, Florida. He enjoyed a wonderful childhood with his parents, three siblings, and countless friends. Tommy went on to attend Bartow High School. Tommy was known for his athleticism, which he displayed on both the hardwood and the gridiron. During his high school career, Tommy was recognized as an All-State performer in basketball and football for the Bartow Yellow Jackets. He was also a member of Bartow's "Key Three" prize winning Key club talent group and traveled to compete against the talent winners of each state. Tommy received a scholarship for outstanding leadership to attend the University of Florida where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He then received his MBA at Old Dominion University and started his professional career at Ford Motor Company shortly after. A few brief years of braving the cold Michigan air was enough for Tommy and he ultimately moved back to Tampa, Florida where he met his wife, Gloria. Tommy worked hard throughout his life at many endeavors however he is best known for his accomplishments serving as President of Ben H. Roberts Produce, Inc. Despite his busy schedule, he found time to attend all of his children's extracurricular activities and sporting events. In addition, he also served as President of the Parents' Association and Chairman of the Board at St. Mary's Episcopal Day School. Tommy was a member of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, where he enjoyed participating in their annual events with friends, particularly the parade. When he wasn't working or volunteering, he was an enthusiastic sports fan that enjoyed playing basketball with his children, cheering on the Florida Gators, and following all sports on television. He was an avid golfer and on the weekends he was not hard to find, as he regularly teed it up at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club with his close friends better known as "the Rascals." It was always fun to be around Tommy. His positive energy was contagious and he was well known for his sense of humor. His grandchildren knew this best as they were his pride and joy. He will be deeply missed by all that know him however we rejoice that he is at peace and reunited in Heaven with his true love. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make a donation to Suncoast Hospice, Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church or Moffitt Cancer Center. A funeral service will take place on Friday, September 2, at 1 pm at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club. www.blountcurrymacdill.com

I am so saddened to hear of Tommy´s passing. We had not seen each other in years but I have many fond memories of the Howell family.
We were not only classmates but back door neighbors. Our closest connection, however was we shared a party line. We often joked about hearing each other´s conversations.
My sincerest condolences to all of Tommy´s precious family.

I remember with true fondness my dear cousin Tommy. At our biannual trips from Louisiana to St Pete to see Grandmama (it took 2, sometimes 3 days to get from New Orleans to St Petersburg by car in the 50s & 60s) we were always able to make the rounds and see the Howells, the Manns, the Thomases and the Ewarts, and occasionally, the Ewarts, the Hornacks and Rentz. All of us matched up with our cousins of the same age and my brother Graves, Chuck and Tommie were the 3 musketeers and were inseparable on those occasions. Later on in life, Tommy and Gloria visited my wife Sally and I a couple of times in New Orleans, I believe on the occasion of Gator vs Tiger football games in Baton Rouge. I will always remember with gratitude that Tommy was able to make it to Graves' memorial service in New Orleans and sincerely regret that I cannot return that kindness to Tommy and his family. We were able to arrange brief visits with Tommy and Gloria after retirement but in more recent years, grandparenting (6+2 on the way) distracted us from more visits. Tommy was a great guy and we will miss him - and I need to express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Gloria who we always enjoyed being with - she was always wonderful to us! God bless all of the Howells!
