Thomas Slot Obituary

Thomas Slot

February 12, 2016

Thomas Slot, 88, of Fort Myers, FL peacefully ascended into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, February 12th, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Thomas was born in Java, Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) to Gerard J Slot and Gertrude M. Slot. As a young teenager he spent three years in a concentration camp during the Japanese occupation in World War II. At wars end, the Dutch were released and at the age of 16 he met the love of his life, Rosa. Together they endured a grueling voyage where Thomas aided Rosa as she battled Malaria on their way to Holland. Thomas would go on to receive a degree in mechanical engineering before immigrating to the United States in pursuit of a better life. He further obtained his Ph.D. and enjoyed a long career at General Electric. In retirement Thomas and his wife Rosa settled in Fort Myers, FL where they enjoyed frequent trips to Sanibel Island. He a had a long time love of tennis, swimming, and riding his bike.

Thomas is pre-deceased by his parents and two brothers. Thomas is survived by his wife Rosa (VanDerHeyden) Slot; his son John Slot (Pauline); his daughter Joanie Dufresne (William); his daughter Ann Ostrander (William); five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Thomas's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Shell Point Pavilion and Hope Hospice for providing compassionate care in his final days.

There will be no formal services at Thomas's request. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

The family has entrusted the care of their loved one to the National Cremation and Burial Society.

Grandpa- Your physical presence will be missed, but your kindness, generous soul and playful spirit will live on in all of us, forever. Thank you for giving us so many wonderful memories and for showing us how to love and truly live.

Grandma- Always thinking of others, your unwavering strength, unconditional love and nurturing nature are just a few of the many reasons that I'm sure captured Grandpa's heart, and helps keep our family close, whether we're near or far.

I feel so lucky that Steph and myself had the chance to have such a great Grandfather. So many great memories. Those times going to Sanibel Island and looking for Sea shells and swimming in the ocean. Those moments I'll never forget. Family meant everything to you, as did to us. I love you Grandpa. You'll never be forgotten. Thank you.

To my Grandpa: I will never forget the cherished memories of my childhood. You taught me so much! You taught me how to drive at such a young age (even when Grandma told you not too). You always included me in everything you did even mowing the lawn! I will forever think about our special times at the beach, the neighborhood pool (you were always such a fast swimmer and beat me no matter what!), trips to Sanibel, the Dairy Queen, playing mahjong, uno, risk, and of course "the finger game" which I have now taught my children. Your sense of humor will stay with me always. Your loving nature is precious. As I grew up I learned more about you and your life accomplishments. I enjoy hearing the stories over again about your childhood and your love story with grandma. I will miss you! To my Grandma, I love you dearly and am so sorry for your loss, may you find peace in knowing that he is at rest. I will pray for you both. Sending hugs and kisses from all of us, and "arm cuddles" from me, Love Stephanie and Dan and family

So sad to hear that Oom Tom has died. So stunned to learn he too suffered from Alzheimer's like my Dad. The pain and heartache you feel now will ease as the warm memories of him carry you on. I miss all of you guys and wish we could get together sometime.

I remember Tom and Rose coming for Hans' wake and funeral nearly 19 years ago which should remind us that while the days may be long, the years fly by. I can't fathom that Hans died in 1998, Gijs in 2011 and now Tom too. The three brothers are together again and are watching over each of us. I think we've done them proud.

Rest in peace Oom Tom

To My Old Dear Friends, the Slot Family ~ Jan, Joan, Boomie and Mrs. Slot:
I have so many wonderful memories of all of you. My sincere condolences for the loss of such a sweet man. I remember Mr. Slot as being relatively quiet and loving classical music which he loved to listen to quite loudly. Seeing this obituary brings back floods of memories. I've thought about you all often and have wondered where life has taken you. My heart goes out to you and your families. It sounds like Mr. and Mrs. Slot had a wonderful, full life together and I remember the love and laughter they shared between themselves. I hope you are all able to find peace and comfort in the days ahead knowing that he is now forever resting in the arms of the angels. Heaven now has a beautiful new, bright star in the sky. Much love to you.

Beauty at Shell Point.

Dad slot, You were a sweet man making us smile every time we were with you. We enjoyed every minute with you and the tours of various places you and mom shared with us on our visits. We will never forget that smile on your face. You were intelligent, loving, kind, funny, organized and you will be missed very much until we see you again.
Mom Slot, we are so sorry you have lost the love of your life. We cannot begin to imagine what it must feel like for you. Our hearts are sad and our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sadness.

There are so many wonderful memories of you to keep with me always. I think that one of the most memorable is the gift you gave all of us (younger generation); a love of "travel". We were given so many opportunities that might not have ever been experienced without your love of putting trips together to far off places for your family. Holland, Majorca, St. Thomas, St. Maarten and finally Sanabel Island...memories of a lifetime that might not have ever been experienced without you. Thank you so much for this. Love, Marcie Slot (Clifton Park, NY)

Dad you were loved so much by so many people. I was proud to have called you "Dad". You called me "Son". Know that Joanie and I will carry your love in our hearts until we meet again. Joanie, Bethany and I will forever remember our time in Aruba with you and Mom. As we remember our loving Dad, this verse from Psalm 23 comes to mind. "Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever". See you someday soon, Dad. Love Bill, Joanie and Bethany DuFresne (Bennington, VT)
