Thomas L. Sweeney, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Devoted husband of 65 years to the late Mary Joan (Josie) Hocks Sweeney. Beloved father of Kathleen, Michael, Kevin, Patrick, Sharon and Shaun (Kim) Sweeney, Eileen (Don) Goodman, Bridget (Chip) Glaescher and Megan (John) Groene. Adored Grandfather of; Caroline, Thomas, Mike and Mary Sweeney, Heather Namovich, Jason Revalee, Aimee Worden and Claire Revalee, Ryan, Andrew and Paige Sweeney, Lailah, Ali and Sami Kassem, Monica Sweeney- Shreve, Shane, Tyler and Megan Goodman, Caitlin Kocak, Conor, Matthew and Monica Glaescher, Jacob, Emma, Charlie, Jack and Eileen Groene. Great Grandfather of; Corinne Revalee, Caleb Namovich, Samantha Shreve, Olivia Worden and Aerial Sweeney. Loving Son of the late Walter J. and Helen Sweeney. Brother of Constance (Joe) McKenna and the late Jane (Gaylord) Lewis, Peggy (Hugh) Bonner, Jacob (Jean) Sweeney, Helen (Charlie) Cantrell, Patricia (Charlie) Buck, Walter (Mary Claire) Sweeney and NiNi (Paul) Hoffman. Brother-in law of Donna (Jim) Meakin, Richard (Elaine) Hocks and the Late Harry (Elaine) Hocks. Also, Uncle to 61 nieces and nephews and loyal companion to his loving pets Dixie and Walter.
While attending Roger Bacon High School, Tom enlisted during WWII in the US Navy and served in the South Pacific on board the Ship, The U.S.S. Bowie. Upon returning home, he re-enlisted in the Reserves and was called back to serve again on a troop carrier, The U.S.S. Ajax during the Korean war.
Tom, along with his late father Walter and brothers Jake and Walt Sweeney were in the automobile business. Next year the Sweeney family will celebrate 100 years in the business and are recognized as one of the first automobile families in Greater Cincinnati. Tom was the owner of Tom Sweeney Imports which represented the finest foreign automobile manufactures and included; Rolls Royce, Jaguar, MG, Triumph, Range Rover, BMW, Austin Healey, Sunbeam and Nissan. Tom also served as President of The Greater Cincinnati Automobile Association and then went on to serve as the President of The American International Automobile Dealers Association, a national organization which represents thousands of Dealers before Congress and Federal agencies.
Tom spent many years volunteering his time and services in our community. He was one of the founders of the Pregnancy Center East, a pro-life advocacy center. Also, Tom headed up the Bread Runners Organization and worked many hours at the St Francis Soup Kitchen both established to help feed the hungry in Greater Cincinnati. Tom also spent many years volunteering at the Holy Spirit Center located in Norwood.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 20, 10AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Church. Visitation will be held Friday, 4-7PM at Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, Mt. Lookout.
