Byles-Groton Memorial Home - Groton Obituary

Timothy “Bill” Sullivan, 82, of Groton; It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Timothy W. Sullivan, on Tuesday September 23, 2025, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. Bill was born on December 28, 1942, in New York City to Catherine Houlihan Sullivan and John Sullivan. Bill married Penelope Wrighter, she survives him.

Bill taught English for 42 years at Montville High School and Norwich Free Academy. He always said, “Teaching is not my occupation, but my vocation.” He loved his students and his subject matter. Bill was known for his love of teaching Shakespeare, where his classes were highly sought after. His other love was coaching Girls’ and Boys’ High School basketball, where defense was his niche.

Besides his beloved wife of 51 years, Penny, he is survived by daughter, Shandon Foley and her husband Michael Foley Jr., grandchildren Corrine Foley and Julia Sjostedt, brother Joe Sullivan and his wife Margaret, brother-in-law Michael Wrighter, and nieces and nephews from the Sullivan and Wrighter families.  He is predeceased by his son Shane, brothers Liam, Gene, and Johnn. He cherished all of his friendships, including the love of the Bilda family.

Bill had a unique gift for storytelling, complete with an Irish brogue. He enjoyed the laughter from his pranks and jokes. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Groton Congregational Church, 162 Monument in Groton, CT.

Donations can be made to Bill’s favorite charity in his memory, to St. Jude's Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Bill’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to the nurses on 5.4 and Davita for their kindness and compassion given to Bill.

Not sure what to say?

Sully was one of my high school basketball coaches at NFA. He was always on me to play defense, something that was definitely not a priority for me in high school. When I got to the college level and my coach told me I had to improve my defense or I wouldn’t play, I could hear Sully’s voice in the back of my head saying “I told you so.” From the many stories he would tell, to the side jokes he would whisper to me on the court, I will always remember how much he invested in me and believed in...

Dear Shandon, so sorry to read of your Dad's passing. My condolences to your family,

Thank you for taking a chance on a shy senior girl who wanted to sing at the Shakespeare Festival. I remember you proclaiming how I was the next American Idol and how important that made me feel. Thank you for inspiring me to be a teacher myself.

So sorry to hear about Bill's passing. I still remember the first time I remembered you guys's names, Bill & Penny. Whenever we have chowder I shall always think of Bill!

Bill Sullivan didn't look for your 'potential' but for what was there already; he found the best in you and celebrated it, recognizing all his students for who they already were. He saw the brilliance inside the kids who were lucky enough to study with him. He was a kind soul and my best model as a teacher. I try to embody what I learned from him when I teach: turning the classroom into a place full of laughter and surprise, where everyone feels safe enough to stretch themselves take risks--a...

I was fortunate enough to grow up with the Sullivans as neighbors. Mr. Bill was a kind, jovial presence throughout my youth, and he will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to the family.

My late husband, Kevin Brown MHS '74, was coached by Bill Sullivan while in high school. There were few people Kevin really looked up to and admired, Bill was one of the few. I heard countless Coach Sullivan stories over the years. My condolences to his family.

Bill exuded passion for his teaching but more for his kids. I loved being called to sub on of his classes. It was exciting to see what props were on his desk. He was so great to stop and talk.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Mr. Sullivan. I was a student of his at NFA. I enjoyed his Shakespeare class and he made learning fun.
