Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg Obituary

Todd Kenneth Funkhouser, age 53, of Gerrardstown, West Virginia, lovingly also known as TFunk, Uncle T, and Mr. Funk, passed away from a cardiac event while hiking his beloved Billy Goat Trail on 13 October 2025.

Todd was born as an Air Force brat in Michigan, and grew up in places spanning the US and Europe. He grew into a rock solid high school football player and mullet-haired guitarist - which is how he earned his "Fabio" moniker. A graduate of Florida State with a Master's in Education from George Mason, Todd started his teaching and coaching career at Park View High School in Sterling and later shifted to Stone Bridge. To realize his goal of working in shorts and toe-shoes every day, he entered the world of an elementary PE teacher in the Loudoun County School system, most recently teaching at Sugarland. To say he was a beloved and effective teacher - no matter where or what he was teaching - is an understatement. He treated every person he encountered with respect and a willingness to help and always said how lucky he felt to work with "his" kids. Todd served his country in Iraq with the Virginia Army National Guard, during which time he met some life-long brothers. His hobbies tied back to his math roots and interest in all things mechanical - from racing motorcycles to instructing drivers in powerful cars to shooting on his range. In addition to trail running, he loved hitting the gym early in the morning. He was joyful, thoughtful, and deeply beloved by all who got to know him through the various aspects of his life, and he was probably the funniest person most of us knew.

He is preceded in death by his father Kenneth V Funkhouser, and is survived by his mother Chris M. Funkhouser of Avon Lake, Ohio, his sister Lauren G. Funkhouser (Chris Joseph) of Falls Church, Virginia, and his nephews Jackson and Benjamin Joseph, along with many loving family members, friends, and students. Donations can be made in Todd's memory to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and/or the C&O Canal Trust; both are responsible for maintaining the Billy Goat Trail.

"A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, 16 November from 1-4PM, with brief remarks at 2pm, at the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company Banquet Hall at 215 Loudoun St SW Leesburg, VA 20175. All ages are welcome, and all attire is welcome - he wouldn't want us getting fancy

Not sure what to say?

Prayers strength and hugz. Grew up with Todd on Chanticleer playing football, kickball, ghosts in graveyard & dancing in basements. Sending all our love, the Cotter clan.

My son Dylan took this on his last day of 5th grade last year!!

Prayers & God’s Blessings to Todd’s family. We knew Todd from his time at SBHS. What a wonderful & dedicated teacher to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I also had the awesome opportunity to be a co-worker -Wessell family. Classes from 2000-2009

Both of my kids had Mr. Funkhouser for PE. Just as is said, everyone who knew him, loved him. We remember him mostly for the kiss and go line and the loud music. The line was not the same on the days he was not there and when he was he had an infectious spirit that set the tone for all to have a great day ! I can't imagine how many lives he touched and how he will be missed. Thank you Mr. Funkhouser. You made our elementary school days fun and memorable.

We never met Todd, but our son served with him in Iraq. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

Todd was a wonderful guy with a huge heart and a great love of adventure. I will never forget meeting him on the Goat Trail and how amazed I was by his positive attitude and fun personality. He was one of a kind.

Todd and I were roomates at FSU and best man at my wedding. We had some amazing adventures together with trips in Europe and Philippines. Loved that man like a brother. So many memories are flooding in. The friend everyone wishes for in their life and a mentor to thousands of kids. Love you Todd. So glad we caught up again the day before.

It was my good fortune to coach football with Todd at Park View High School. He was a thoughtful and considerate person in all situations. His sincerity was obvious to those with whom he worked. His students had the outstanding opportunity to have a truly special mentor!
