TRAVIS COBORN Obituary

Travis M. Coborn, 39, of Olathe, Kan., passed away May 5, 2010. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m., with services 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, at the McGilley & Frye Chapel at 105 E. Loula in Olathe. Burial at Olathe Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Travis Coborn Children's Educational Fund. Travis was born July 7, 1970, in Rapid City, S.D. At the age of 1 year, he and his family moved to Olathe, Kan., and his roots were firmly planted there. He was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints and became an Eagle Scout at 14 years old. For over 20 years, Travis was employed at Mattress City; he considered them all like family. Travis was a devoted husband and father. In 1994, he married his wife, Janet. His family was the most important thing to him, always. He was well-thought of by many people because he was a steady, strong man, and he showed outstanding kindness. He was happiest when outdoors. An avid fisherman and hunter, no tree stand was too high for him. He loved working and playing on the farm. He was preceded in death by grandparents Major and Dorothy Weiss, Emmett and Minnie Coborn, and brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Belinda Pearcy. Survivors include his wife, Janet; his children, Zach, 21 years, Paige, 16 years, and Elias, age 9; mother and husband, Sally and Robert Simon; father and wife, Aubrey and Nancy Coborn; brothers Jack Pearcy, Allen Coborn; sisters Melody Goodspeed, Pam Copeland, and also by an additional six sisters and three brothers who loved and cherished him very much, and nieces, nephews, many cousins and extended family. A special thanks to Pascal, Ann and John for their help and contributions. McGilley and Frye Funeral Home, 105 E Loula St, Olathe, KS 66061, 913-782-0582

Travis was like a second dad to me. He always had the best advice. He was always there for his family. The first time I met Travis, I had just started dating his oldest son, Zach and my friend's car needed a jump start. he came over at 10:30 that night and got her car running. From that day on I knew Travis was a very caring and thoughtful person. He was an awesome father too all three of his kids. I love Travis and his family. My thoughts and prayers go out everyday. Much love.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Elias is a wonderful student and such a sweet and brave young man. He always talks about his father Travis and all the fun they've had fishing and hunting together. His "star of the week" picture was of he and his dad holding their "catch of the day". :) I can tell he has truly treasured the time he's had with Travis. I'm sure he was a blessing to you all and I hope your fond memories of him can fill your empty hearts at this time.

Sally,
I am so sorry to hear about your son. I wish that I could be there today as support for you all. My family was very fond of Travis. They grew up with him. I wasn't close like some of my brothers & sisters, due to how far away I live. But they only have kind things to say about him. "He was the kind of guy that would go out of his way for anyone. If he didn't have time, he would make time. Anything to make your life easier." You must be so proud of the person that you raised. My heart goes out to you, his wife & children, & the rest of your family. He will be missed. This is the toughest part of life. I can't even imagine how you must feel. I can only believe that our Father in Heaven has a greater purpose for him now. He has already accomplished what he was sent here to do. He brought much joy into this world & set such a wonderful example for us all to follow. Love you... You'll be in my prayers.

Uncle Travis taught me that a finger can be harder than a wall. My best memory of him was showing me how to hit a wall with a finger and not hurt yourself. I always hurt myself, and Uncle Travis would just smile. I remember him showing me a gold Nokia Chinese or Japanese cell phone they found on the beach. He always made us kids smile. It was pretty cool when he lived in the basement of grandmas house -- we got to see him quite a bit. I'll miss him.
Until we meet again, Uncle Travis.

On behalf of our family I would like to express our gratitude for the love and support extended at this time of great loss. Travis' passing has created a void that can never be filled. This man gave so much of himself to so many. We pray that his goodness and compassion shall live on in each of you who loved and cared about him. Travis has been and shall always be one of the greatest gifts in my life. I am so very grateful that Heavenly Father shared him and allowed me to be his mother. Sally Simon

We are sorry for your loss. You will miss the companionship of your husband, father, son, and brother. May the memories soon be sweet. I remember when I was Travis' Cub Scout den mother. He was enthused about fulfilling the requirements for advancement, a great example to the other boys in the den. He especially lliked field trips and outdoor activities. It looks like his love for the outdoors continued. Another memory of Travis is when he took my oldest daughter, Megan, to his school fun fair. She was about four, making him about eight. Sally pulled into the driveway. I watched from the window as Travis got out of the car, walked up to the door, rang the bell and politely asked if Megan was ready. He then held her hand as they went down the steps, opened the car door for her and helped her inside. The perfect gentleman. No doubt he continued that throughout his life as well. You are in our prayers. Jim and Chris Challis
