Vernice Winfield Mack, "Miss Vee", 91, of Frederick, died Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Kline Hospice House following a series of medical challenges. Born in Stony Creek, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late George and Emmaline (Key) Winfield.
She attended Masontown School for primary and secondary education. She went onto attend and receive an undergraduate degree from Virginia State (College) University where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and met her future husband, LeCoast Mack. She also later pursued and achieved a graduate education degree from Johns Hopkins University. Vernice and LeCoast Mack married in 1956 and moved to Frederick, Maryland in the early 1960s. She built a career as an elementary school teacher in Frederick County. While balancing a career and raising a family, she was very active in the community.
Vernice Mack was devoted to First Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC) for more than 55 years and served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher. She served and enjoyed participating in several organizations. Most notable are: the Frederick Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc., Chi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed traveling around the world with friends and family, visiting places she taught about in school. She also invested time volunteering at Frederick County Board of Elections, Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (including the Select Seconds shop), and participating in a duckpin bowling league.
To cherish her memory, she leaves her: daughters, Karen Mack and Kimberly Mack-Coates; son-in-law, Leslie Coates III; "adopted" sister, Marjorie Williams; grandsons, Brenden and Bryson Coates; and a host of cousins, close associates, and dear friends. Vernice was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at First Missionary Baptist Church, 6430 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, MD, with the family receiving friends at 10 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. Pastor Timothy McLaurin, Jr. will officiate.
