Victor Cline Obituary

1925 ~ 2013
Beloved husband and father, Victor Bailey Cline, passed away surrounded by his family on January 15, 2013 at his home in Salt Lake City. He is survived by his wife Lois, and nine children: Russ (Melou), Janice (Richard), Robyn, Chris (Cathy), Rick (Kim), Connie (Pete), Paul (Shirley), Julie (Tyler), Rebecca (Stephen), 33 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
An expert in the field of Psychology, he was a noted speaker, author, teacher, media expert, and counselor. His most important legacy, however, is his family. Victor led an exemplary life which has left a lasting impact on his community and those who knew him well.
As part of the "Greatest Generation" he fought on the European front until the end of WW II. Victor graduated from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Psychology and in 1951, married the love of his life, Lois, in the LDS Manti Utah Temple.
Victor taught at the University of Utah for 43 years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he pioneered research on the effects of media violence and pornography. His articles have appeared in many lay and professional publications, and he has authored several books which include "How to Make Your Child A Winner."
Passionately committed to strengthening marriages and families, Victor worked tirelessly to educate and assist in this effort. In 1978, he established Marriage Enrichment, an organization dedicated to helping couples improve their marriage and family life.
A devoted father and husband, Victor will be affectionately remembered for his entertaining "Jackie-boy" stories, as well as his love for music (especially Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"), movies, and Iceberg shakes.
Victor was a lifelong member of the LDS church, where he faithfully served in a wide variety of positions. He also served a mission to England with his wife, Lois.
A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday evening, January 20, at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, SLC. A service will be held at the LDS chapel located at 2125 Evergreen Ave, SLC at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, with a viewing beforehand from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Cline was my Child psychology professor at the U of Utah. He was an excellent professo. I was a Molecular and Genetic biology students, we would spend hours talking about the up and coming field of genetics. I will miss his wonderful way of being and in my years as a mother used his book as a guide to raising my own children. I will always be appreciative!

Thirty three years ago, I had the privilege of sitting next to Vic for five years as we each served on the Valley View Stake High Council. As the high council counseled together, Vic provided great depth of insight into whatever matter was being discussed. He said some things that have stuck with me ever since that I have used on many occasions. I also loved his sense of humor. All our love to Lois and the family.

Dear Cline family, very sorry to hear of your father's passing. Although I never met your father, I have heard over the years some great stories about Victor B. Cline! He was my Father's "foxhole buddy" during WWII, in the 35th Infantry Division. As children growing up, almost every night at the dinner table, we heard war stories from our Father. And Victor B. Cline's name was always mentioned! I know my Father always had a tremendous amount of respect for his dear friend and "foxhole buddy". God bless him and may his spirit always be with you!

I just found out about Victor Cline's death. My sincere condolences to his family. What a tender and difficult time for you. Love to Lois for your kindness and a willingness to share your husband with the world. I met Dr. Cline when I was working as a reporter at the Deseret News in 1976 & 77. My first introduction to him was as a counselor. He blessed my life as a safe and open confidant where I could share struggles I couldn't talk about anywhere else. Later in my career we collaborated on a project for the newspaper when he was called in to analyze the Gary Gilmore Letters and artwork that I had gained access to as a reporter. He was professional, congenial, wonderful to work with. Later, as a married woman we attended The Marriage Enrichment Workshop with Lois and Victor as guides. We still remember things we learned over thirty years ago from them. When I went back to school to become a counselor myself he provided support by giving me valuable information and an interview for a class project. Despite all he had to do he was willing to take time. Just last night I found a picture that the Deseret News took of Dr. Cline and myself working on the letters. It will be posted on my website www.creatingalifeyoulove.net at the bottom of the homepage with a brief tribute. He did so much for so many on this earth! Thank you to the dear Cline family for sharing him with us. Much love and respect.

He was extremely helpful in my recovery, and I will always be grateful. He also was very instrumental in helping the LDS church use the 12 step approach to addictions.

Great Man with a great family. Will always remember him sharing inspirational war stories with me and other scouts as we sat around a campfire in the high Unitas. Definitely a hero in the purest sense.

The field of psychology has lost one of the noble and great ones. How much I admire Victor's passion in advocating for what was not always popular among his colleagues but was right--and character building--and society enhancing. Godspeed to him, and comfort to the Cline family.'

Dr. Cline helped me get a lot of " emotional weeds" out of my life's garden clear back in the 1980's . What a sweet , kind, gentle man.
Thank you Dr Cline. May you find great success as you start your mission in the Spirit World.

Our family lived by the Clines and always felt they were a wonderful family. Victor was a gracious and kind man. It is sad to see our neighbors pass away as we have so many wonderful memories of Millstream Lane.

Vic has blessed so many lives. His example has been wonderful. I know first hand that he has blessed hundreds of marriages with love and good counsel through his profession but especially through marriage enrichment seminars which he and all the lead couples do as a service and donation to the cause of great marriages. We will miss Victor but know that living a life as he has, he is enjoying his new experiences. May The Lord bless your family in your absence and especially Lois as she moves forward without her dear companion.
We love you

Sending love and strength to the Cline family. I am eternally grateful to Victor Cline for his influence on my life. He was compassionate and yet very real and straight forward. His guidance and counsel was very meaningful in my life as well as so many others that he influenced for good. Thank you. Thank you and God bless you with the comfort your family needs.

Vic Cline has left an indelible impression on my mind of his kindness and concern for others. Since his friendship with my dad back in their university days in Berkeley, I have heard his name mentioned in our home with respect and love for his keen intelligence and generosity of spirit. He and Lois are much loved by my parents, Neil and Liahona. He will be missed but I will always be lifted up by my memory of him and his example and his interest in others.
