I met Jimmy in 1967 when he played at my college.Soon thereafter I became his student. He was an inspiring and demanding teacher.I last saw him a few of years ago when I visited him in Florida.I played for him.He was no less inpiring AND DEMANDING.I will always treasure his artistry, the support and kindness he showed me and his undying enthusiasm.

I want to express my condolences to Mr. Abato's family. His playing inspired me in high school to study the saxophone as a classical instrument. He was truly one of the great classical saxophone players of all time.

My condolences to the family.
We met many years ago at the Carl Fischer Musical Instrument Co. when Jimmy was negotiating to be involved with the Buffet sax add campaign. The meeting led to my Dad being involved with the sale of his house in Fresh Meadows.
We both had small hands and he was of help to me in our discussions of bass clarinet fingerings an instrument he was outstanding on, as he was on the sax.
