Wendelin Lummel Obituary

Wendelin Lummel

November 17, 1935 - September 5, 2024

Wendelin Peter Lummel of Bridgeport, NE passed away peacefully at his home on September 5, 2024. Services will be held at the All Souls Catholic Church on Thursday September 12, 2024, at 10:30 (rosary will begin at 10:00). He will have a viewing on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Bridgeport Memorial Chapel from 3:00 – 7:00p.m. Wendy was the only child of Peter and Myrtle Lummel, he was born in West Point, NE November 17, 1935. He attended school at Guardian Angels Catholic school at West Point, graduating in 1953. While attending school he held several occupations such as detasseling corn, paper routes, setting up pins (by hand) at the bowling alley and the start of his lifelong profession working at the West Point Republican.

He married the love of his life, Oneva, on April 4, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point. On Nov. 1st, of that same year, the young couple loaded up their 1947 Plymouth and made a 400-mile blizzard enhanced trip to Bridgeport to work at the Bridgeport News-Blade for T. A. and Dorothy Lally as a printer and Linotype operator. While working there he always found a part time job to assist in supporting his family. Oneva and Wendy operated a combination shoe repair shop as well as a vacuum cleaner repair and sales business for several years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting and fishing. After retirement he enjoyed having coffee with his morning crew and then shooting pool at the Community Center with his friends. Wendy and Oneva also did many years of serving and visiting with the families on Meals on Wheels.

In November of 1975 they purchased the Bridgeport News-Blade from the Lally family, operating that business until their retirement in August of 2009. They always put Bridgeport ahead of anything else and Lions Club as well. They were on several boards during the 40 years as co-editor of the "Blade".

There is so much to say about our father, how wonderful he was, his gentle demeanor and quiet strength. His compassion to the community of Bridgeport. We extend our gratitude to his friends, family, and the medical profession who helped make his last days comfortable. He was a kind and compassionate man, father, grandfather great grandfather and great-great grandfather.

Preceding in death was his wife, Oneva Lummel, parents, Myrtle and Peter Lummel, two grandsons Christopher Wise and Andrew Lummel, daughter-in-law Shelley Lummel.

Survivors include their children: Debbie (Bill) Wise of Bridgeport, Susan (David) Newman of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, and James Lummel of Bridgeport. Wendy was blessed with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to All Souls Catholic Church or to the Prairie Winds Community Center.
