Wendell Gamel Obituary

Wendell Wesley Gamel
1929-2021
Wendell Wesley Gamel, 91, of Montgomery, Texas passed away on January 18, 2021 in Montgomery, Texas.
There will be private grave side services on Tuesday, January 26th with the Reverend Jeff Berger of First Baptist Conroe, officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are by Cashner Funeral Home, Conroe, TX.
Wendell was born in Dallas, Georgia in 1929 to J T and Alma Lester Gamel. He married Betty Hagood on December 20th, 1955 in Crestview, FL. He is a proud alumnus of Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the Air Force after graduating from college. He was stationed in Morocco during the Korean war.
Wendell was devoted to his church, First Baptist Conroe where he was a long-time deacon. Prior to moving to Montgomery Texas, he attended Memorial Drive Baptist Church where he served on various committees and was also as a long-time deacon. His faith was important to him. He left a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Wendell was devoted to his family. He was married to Betty Hagood Gamel for 65 years. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's and their spouses' accomplishments. He loved to tell all he met about their activities.
Wendell spent his 30 plus year career as an engineer, entrepreneur and executive at Tech Sym Corporation, a Houston Texas based company traded on the NY stock exchange, from which he retired as President and Chairman of the Board in 2000. He travelled the world and met with many foreign dignitaries. Tech Sym was a major supplier and manufacturer of defense and electronic equipment. After retirement, he moved from Hedwig Village to April Sound where he enjoyed playing golf and participating in the men's Bible study with friends and neighbors.
Wendell was successful in life because of his energy and keen intellect. He never met a stranger. He had an ability to speak intelligently with anyone he met on a wide variety of subjects. To his children, he was the smartest person they knew.
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, JT and Alma Gamel of Dallas, GA; brother Max Barry Gamel and sister Dorothy Virginia Allen.
Wendell is survived by wife Betty Hagood Gamel, son Dan and wife Deborah Gamel, son Keith and wife Laurie Gamel, daughter Rebecca and husband Charles Mueller, his brother Terry and wife Joan Gamel, and sister Sarah and husband Joe Belflower, grandchildren Jill Wegner and husband Aaron, Travis Gamel, Bethany Simmons and husband Will, Kristin Gamel, Kelsey Gamel, Will Mueller and wife Taryn, Jonathan Gamel and wife Kaitlin, Meredith Coulter and husband Jake, Kirby Gamel, Mackenzie Gamel, Trent Gamel and Elizabeth Mueller; great grandchildren Ada Wegner, Cora Wegner, Maggie Simmons, Miles Wegner, Maeson Grace Coulter and Emily Simmons and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church Conroe. The family of Wendell Gamel wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Always Best Care The Woodlands and Amedisys Hospice.

Charles B. Johnson, Retired President of Metric Systems

January 29, 2021

Wendy had already moved to Houston when I went to work at Metric Systems in Ft Walton Beach. As time went on and I was promoted at Metric, I began to work more closely with Wendy. I found him to be an honest and caring individual. He was always as interested in your family as he was in conducting business. He always took time for me, no matter how very busy he was at Tech Sym. We all quickly realized how very smart he was, but he was also willing to offer very creative solutions to any problem we encountered. He also was very curious by nature, and that led to some fascinating conversations. After we both retired, we kept in touch and enjoyed each other's company. I kept him up-to-date on our former employees because he was truly interested in how and what they were doing. Donna and I offer our sincerest condolences to Betty and the entire Gamel family. He was a person whom we all greatly admired, and so he will be very much missed as a presence in our lives.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Gamel from our time at Memorial Drive Baptist Church. No one had a bigger hug or warmer greeting. He lived into his faith and truly created a church family with his dedication and humor. My thoughts are with you all. Warmly, Doreen

God bless your family Betty. So sorry to hear about Wendell but he is with HIS Lord. I know Wendell will be sorely missed. He was such a smart, very sweet and caring man. John loved to play golf with him and our get togethers with your grandchildren at their golfcamp was such fun. Missed seeing and being with you Betty all these years. I wrote another memory and I cannot find it. Not sure if it took. So sorry we have not seen or talked in such a long time.

Love you all and we pray for lots of blessings for you, dear Wendell and your family !!

Betty, our hearts ache for you and your family to be losing dear Wendell who was absolute sweetheart, just like you. I am so sorry we haven't gotten together for so many years but between COVID-19 and all our medical ill it has made it difficult. We were both blessed by knowing Wendell, Betty and her wonderful grandchildren during golf camp with our grandsons years ago . John loved to play golf with him !! Very smart, sweet and gentle man. I guess he is now trying to play golf with the angels !! He will be missed by many. God bless Wendell, Betty and his wonderful familly!!

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Gamel, Dan, Keith, and Rebecca. Memories of your family go back to 1966 when you moved from Ft. Walton Beach to Houston and Mr. Gamel became part of Tech-Sym. He had a keen mind and a great interest in all things. He was gregarious and energetic. Most of all he loved and was devoted to his entire family. He did not speak unkindly of anyone, was forgiving, and gave freely and generously to those needing a helping hand. May you be comforted in knowing you were always there for him too.
