SGM Terry Bell USAR Ret. 87 MAC
February 5, 2026
On my first meeting the General, on a drill weekend, and I we were walking towards each other, in a hallway at the unit. He stopped and addressed me as a SFC at the time by name. I was a B'ham Police Officer for 20 years. He talked about one of his daughters that like to run in some questionable areas sometimes. He did not trust these Wal Mart defensive sprays and asked if I could him some of the real stuff. I got what I would have bought at a local Police supply store in B'ham in a size appropriate for a runner and sent it to him. He thanked me.
I could go on about his friends in D.C. but on this one occasion I went into his office at the 87th and was dazzled by the 8X10's he had on his walls. It was a who's who of many famous and very distinguished men in DC. All were autographed. Smartest man I have ever known. His stories were never ending. He was very kind. His heroism against those human wave attacks in Korea, in the cold....... I could go on.

He was a hero to me and I'm sure to many others. As a special assignment, I worked for him, on Veterans Day in Birmingham, for several years while he was the Commanding General of the 87th. I loved his wit , wisdom and his stories. He was also one of the smartest men I have ever known. I will miss him always. He was a true Southern gentleman.

I served with Gen. Tankersley in the past and always had the highest respect for him over the years. I served in the 87th MAC in Birmingham and later served as DCSOPS of the 75th MAC in Houston.
I was Rotary District Governor (D-6860)
for North Alabama in the Centennial Year
(2004-2005). His leadership will be missed. He was truly Outstanding.

Mr. Tankersley had a profound influence on my life and that of my husband, Phil. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have worked along side him for 8 years at Sterne, Agee & Leach, during the 80's. I learned so much from him, and we are so sorry that we did not learn of his passing sooner, or we would have definitely attended the service. Our deepest sympathies to his family. He will live on in the memories of many, many people like myself, that he positively influenced. God speed my friend, until we meet again.

Sympathy to Tankersley family. My late husband, Henry W. Ivey, II, and Will Hill were friends while serving together with the Alabama Army Reserve units. Grateful for their service to country. God Bless.

Will Hill was a force not just a man. He made such an impact on the world and on all who were blessed to know him. I cherish him and his memory. I am sad that his smile no longer graces this earth. I shall miss him.
