William F. ALLEN

ALLEN, William F. Professor, Doctor, LTC USA (Ret.) of Sun City Center, entered into rest Sept. 24, 2013. He was born to William E. and Ada P. Allen in Lovington, NM, on July 5, 1922. He graduated from Bennington, VT. High School class of 1939. He is a graduate of Yale, class of 1943, where he later served as Corresponding Secretary. After World War II, William received a MA from Yale University, and further studied at Columbia University. He was at the University of Bridgeport for 42 years as a professor and administrator. He also received two Honorary Doctorates. As an Executive Assistant to the President for International Affairs, William traveled the world making friends where ever he went. William was also Secretary General of the International Association of University Presidents and from whom he received their Medal of Honor. As a founding director and Secretary Treasurer of The New England Historical Association and upon his retirement, William was given Emeritus status. William also wrote an unpublished History of The University of Bridgeport. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army and stayed in the reserves retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He holds the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and many other campaign decorations. He landed on D-Day and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. As an avid golfer, he was proud of his four holes in one. William was very active in the leadership of his church, The Sun City Center United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Ruth C. He is survived by his two daughters, Robin and Jill and their respective spouses; and by two grandchildren, Kathryn and Kyle. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Yale Alumni fund, Life Path Hospice in Sun City, or to the Sun City Center United Methodist Church.
