Not sure what to say?

This is John ("Jack") Birmingham, Ph.D., in Richmond, VA, formerly of Wilmington, NC. My mother was Sallie Carr Southerland, a cousin of Cousin Dallas's. I visited Cousin Dallas numbers of times at his home in Rose Hill and was always impressed by his knowledge of our Duplin County family histories---the Southerlands, the Carrs, the Wellses, the Teacheys, the Boneys, the Farriors, and I don't know how many more. Thank you, Dallas. You are sorely missed.
Jack

With the encouragement of Dr. Ben Fountain, then President of the NC Community College System, I became Dr. Herring's shadow for two years, spending hundreds of hours interviewing him, reading all his papers then in the NC Archives, interviewing five governors who had intimate knowledge of his work, and many other educatinal leaders. My deepest sympathy to all and sincerest gratitude to Dr. Herring for his unending genealogy research of our Herring Family.

Rose Hill has indeed suffered a great loss. I remember as a child living in an apartment in the Herring house. My name is Sue Pope Olson and my father was Giles Pope. Rose Hill has always been very dear to me.

Dallas meant so much to my parents, Jean Stokes Ross and Calvin Ross. He was a joy to know and will be missed. My condolences from the Ross family.

My sympathy to family and friends.
Dallas knew what needed to be done in education for NC and did it..I was pleased to be at the NC State ceremony honoring him for his contribution to the community college systems. A truely great man..
