John Birmingham (Jr.)

This is John ("Jack") Birmingham, Ph.D., in Richmond, VA, formerly of Wilmington, NC. My mother was Sallie Carr Southerland, a cousin of Cousin Dallas's. I visited Cousin Dallas numbers of times at his home in Rose Hill and was always impressed by his knowledge of our Duplin County family histories---the Southerlands, the Carrs, the Wellses, the Teacheys, the Boneys, the Farriors, and I don't know how many more. Thank you, Dallas. You are sorely missed.

As a doctoral student at NC State University, I wrote my dissertation on the major contributions of Dr. Herring to NC education. With the encouragement of Dr. Ben Fountain, then President of the NC Community College System, I became Dr. Herring's shadow for two years, spending hundreds of hours interviewing him, reading all his papers then in the NC Archives, interviewing five governors who had intimate knowledge of his work, and many other educatinal leaders. Dr. Herring was an inspiring, genteel, articulate, and productive champion of education. Working with him was one of the highlights of my life. I have kept in touch with him over the years, and last visited him in 2005. My son and I have many fond memories of him. We'll miss him. I send my condolences to his family.

Rose Hill has indeed suffered a great loss. I remember as a child living in an apartment in the Herring house. My name is Sue Pope Olson and my father was Giles Pope. Rose Hill has always been very dear to me.

Dr.Herring gave so much of himself to the people of North Carolina, improving the lives of so many who he never knew by name but knew in spirit as fellow citizens of this great state, his beloved home and his legacy.

Mr. Herring, I will remember how caring and helpful he was to me, just a voice on the phone wanting genealogy information. He went out of his way to see that I received what I needed. Thanks Mr. Herring! You will be missed!

As a North Carolina native and a former employee of Rockingtham Community College in Wentworth, NC, I have long admired Dr. Herring for his contributions to education and, especially, the community college system. I now work in the College of Education at NC State University and am saddened by this loss.

My condolences to all. What a special man this was to fit so much into a lifetime. Dallas worked for my Daddy (Marsden Farrior) when he was in high school at the drug store. Daddy spoke often of Dallas and looked him up each time he went to Rose Hill. It will seem strange that he is no longer there.
