William Ivan Schoenfeld

Lakewood - William Ivan Schoenfeld, 83, of Lakewood passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018. His long, meaningful life was filled with a wonderful family and great friends and was marked by an illustrious career. While obtaining his undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont, he enlisted and proudly served in the Naval Reserve. He received his masters degree from New York University. Subsequently, he was a charter member of Ocean County College and ultimately, became Chairman of its Fine and Performing Arts Department. He and his wife worked together to create successful jewelry design businesses in Metalorgy and Gemsmith. Active in the community, he was especially devoted to his work as a Board Member and President of Ocean's Harbor House, which provides a safe haven and services for homeless youth. He is survived by Elaine, his wife of 59 years, and their children, Gwen Schoenfeld and her husband Barry Mehlman, and Ketti Schoenfeld and her husband Michael Jones, as well as their grandchildren, Kenzie Jones, Cameron Mehlman and Kya Mehlman. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at Congregation B'nai Israel at 1488 Old Freehold Road, Toms River, NJ. Burial will follow at B'nai Israel Memorial Park, Toms River. Elaine will be sitting shiva and welcomes friends and family to her house following the funeral as well as on Thursday and Friday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ocean's Harbor House http://www.oceansharborhouse.org/ways-to-help/donate-now/.

I had the privelage of meeting this man and his family a few years back. A few hours with him and his son in law, was all it took for him to leave a mark on my heart. His confidence in who he was and his priorities as a business man were evident but more so the love and his sense of duties as a father and husband were the lessons i took with me. Those traits are Extremely rare in our day. So now my only prayers are for his family that they may know how his life touched so many that they are unaware of. And those facts alone will strengthen them and give them the confidence they need to carry on his legacy. Thank you Bill for sharing those few hours with me. Scott Jones

I am so sorry to see Bill pass. He was an inspiration to many of us growing up in Lakewood with his dedication to our schools and his famous artwork that adorned the exterior of the Irvington Hotel. I remember long talks with him in my teen years when he was a thoughtful listener, not a lecturer, as well as the humor he shared with me in my later years. Goodbye to a great man.
