William Selden Obituary

William Weaver Selden, Jr.

Raleigh

William Weaver Selden, Jr., 75, respected husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 12, 2016, at Duke Raleigh Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 7, 1941, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, to the late William Weaver Selden and Ann Joyner Selden of Weldon, NC. Bill enjoyed growing up among a close group of family and friends, and he graduated from Weldon High School.

He then entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1964. He was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Order and a lifelong Tar Heel fan. It was in Chapel Hill where he met his beloved wife of 51 years, Lucelia Van Patten White.

Bill moved to Raleigh where he became a trusted and well-respected member of the North Carolina banking community. He spent over 40 years at Wachovia Bank & Trust where he served as Senior Vice-President, and many will remember him as a mentor and friend. After retiring from Wachovia, he remained involved in banking and particularly enjoyed his professional association with Ewing Loan Advisors.

Bill had a strong belief in giving back to the community and actively participated in many civic, professional, and educational organizations, including the NC Bankers Association, the American Cancer Society, the Loaves and Fishes Ministry, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, and the Sphinx Club of Raleigh. He loved his family and friends and was an active participant in all of their community events.

He is survived by his wife, Lucelia W. Selden and children, Lucelia McClain Percy and husband, Adrian John Percy of Dusseldorf, Germany; and Ann Selden Ashby and husband, Ken Christopher Ashby of Raleigh; his sister, Tempe Selden Bowles and husband Charles Phillips Bowles of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, William Adrian Percy and Lucelia Grace Percy, of Dusseldorf, Germany; and nephew, Daniel Selden Smith of Richmond, VA. He will be remembered by a large extended family and friends as a true southern gentleman with integrity, kindness, and humor.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, NC, on Monday, Oct. 17, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of William W. Selden, Jr. to the Duke Cancer Institute to support cancer research for leukemia and lymphoma cancers. Checks may be written to the Duke Cancer Institute and mailed to the following address: 710 W. Main Street, Suite 200, Durham, NC 27701, or donations may be made online at https://www.gifts.duke.edu/dci.

Condolences to the family. I knew Bill from a young age in Weldon. His parents lived 2 houses down from my grandparents. Over the years I did run into him at Wachovia. Prayers go with you all.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bill only briefly, as we shared some part-time work during retirement. We also shared many conversations about our families, and the love and respect shared in his family was always obvious in those conversations. Bill was a man of kindness and integrity, and I am truly sorry for your loss.
