William Sharp Obituary

William E Sharp, Jr

October 4, 1928 - June 11, 2024

Hughson, California - William E. Sharp, Jr, affectionately known as Bill, passed peacefully away, joining his Lord and Savior on June 11, 2024, in Hughson, California, at the age of 95.

He was born on October 4, 1928, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to William E. (Elmo) and Vera Sharp, the first of four children, followed by sisters Helen and Jacqueline and brother Edward. Bill's early journey originated on the family farm in Green Mountain, Iowa. There, he experienced many life-long lessons that helped him develop godly principles during The Great Depression and while he matured during World War II. He progressed into a life rich in education, service, and community involvement.

Bill's unwavering dedication to education was a cornerstone of his life. He completed all twelve grade school years in one building and continued his academic journey at the University of Iowa. There, he met his future wife, Janet E. Bliss, and followed her back to California, where they were married on August 27, 1949. Bill's commitment to education was further demonstrated in his career, where he devoted nearly half his 30-year career with the Sylvan Union School District in various capacities. His passion for learning and teaching was genuinely influential, leaving a legacy of commitment to education that will continue to inspire others.

Bill was deeply rooted in his community, participating actively in several organizations. He was a member of the YMCA and volunteered with its Y's Men for over 25 years, the Modesto Institute of Continued Learning (MICL), and the Saint Andrew's Society. He loved God and found spiritual nourishment at the Samaritan Village Chapel, where he was a regular attendee. His active involvement in these organizations left a lasting impact on the community, demonstrating his deep commitment to service.

His passion for sailing was well-known. He owned several sailboats and was a member of the Stanislaus Sailing Society, where he served as Commodore. His love for sailing was not just a hobby but a testament to his dedication and leadership. That was demonstrated through his service in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he initially served in the local Flotilla as a Boating Safety Instructor and performed numerous courtesy Vessel Safety Examinations. He advanced to Flotilla Captain, progressed to Division Captain, and served as a District Staff Officer for Information Services. He was a shining example through his patriotism and dedication, as evidenced by numerous awards and commendations. For 36 years, he selflessly served, a significant part of his life that reflected his deep commitment to his community and country.

He is survived by his sister, Helen H. Doyle, and his brother, Edward D. Sharp. He is also survived by his children, Corena A. Sharp (Larry Green), Jacquelyn M. Buckner (Jack), Deborah M. Taylor (Frank), and Edward G. Sharp, nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was the husband of Janet B. Sharp for 66 years until her passing. His sister, Jacqueline A. Sharp, also preceded him.

Services to honor Bill's life will be held at 2 p.m. on July 10, 2024, at Samaritan Village, 7700 Fox Rd, Hughson, CA. His final resting place will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, with arrangements handled by Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson, CA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan Village Chapel (7700 Fox Road, Hughson, CA 95326), honoring Bill's commitment to his faith. Bill's legacy of service, education, and community involvement will be remembered by all who knew him.

I remember Bill as an instrumental part of the YMCA board and the Y's Mens Club. He was a kind and gentle leader and very devoted to the mission of the YMCA. I appreciated and admired his keen sense of humor and his big smile!

Bill was a teacher at Somerset Middle School when I worked in the office. He was kind and always had a smile and warm greeting. He made a positive difference in the education of those students he taught. May your memories of your lives together buoy you in the days ahead.
