Dr. William John Wetta

1931 - 2016

Dr. William John Wetta passed away in New Orleans, LA on Sunday, July 10, 2016. He was born on February 16, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After a childhood illness, Dr. Wetta decided to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from LSU, Baton Rouge, LA in 1953, followed by LSU School of Medicine - New Orleans, LA in 1957. He completed his radiology residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, in 1961, where he was Chief Resident. He later moved to Mobile, AL where he became a Radiologist at Mobile General Hospital. In 1964, he became a Radiologist at Mobile Infirmary, where he founded the Department of Nuclear Medicine and served as the Safety Director for the Department of Radiology for many years, as well as being the Chairman of the Radiology Department. Dr. Wetta was a member of the Lions Club, American Medical Association, American College of Radiology, Society of Nuclear Medicine, Southern Radiology Society, Medical Society of State of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and served as a Clinical Associate Professor of the University of South Alabama Medical Center. Dr. Wetta was an avid antique car collector, a lifelong volunteer and philanthropist, and was a member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. He had a strong work ethic and a passion for pursuing what he loved. His dedication to others touched many lives and he will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas John Wetta and Sarah Ann Chapman Wetta, sons Steve Adams Wetta, and Dean Edward Taylor. He is survived by daughter Nicole Elizabeth Wetta, and sons Christopher John Wetta and Ricky Allen Wetta, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special thanks for the loving care extended for many years by the devoted caregivers at Comfort Keepers of Mobile, AL, Serenity Senior Residences of Metairie, LA, and Notre Dame Hospice of New Orleans, LA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend services at 11:00am on Friday, July 15, which will be held in the chapel at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Mobile, AL at a later date.
