Wilmer Furuta Obituary

Furuta Wilmer Kenchi "Bill" Furuta, M.D., passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, while in the care of his wife, Juanita and son, Alexander, after a four year battle with cancer. Bill was born on November 21, 1942 in Poston, Arizona in an internment camp set up for Japanese Americans during World War II. He is preceded in death by his parents Ichiro and Amy Furuta. Bill's family, along with four other Japanese families, settle in Columbus following the end of the war and were among the founding families who organized the Japanese American Club, an organization dedicated to the blending of American and Japanese culture. Bill attended Indianola Jr. High School and North High School, where he published research in the National Institute of Health during his senior year. He continued his education at The Ohio State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy, and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, pre-medical honorary, and received his M. D. in 1968, elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honorary. Bill completed his adult, child, and adolescent psychiatric fellowships from 1968-1972, and received a Master of Science degree in medicine from the Ohio State University. Between 1972-1974, Bill was Chief of Psychiatry and Neurology at Fort Hood Texas, United States Army, during the Vietnam War. He then returned to Columbus to become Executive Medical Director for the Diocesan Child Guidance Center until 1985. Bill was a psychiatric consultant to various mental health facilities in Central Ohio prior to opening up Central Ohio Counseling in Worthington, Ohio where he practiced medicine until February, 2014. Patients and his loyal staff were his primary concerns. His dedication and long years of service to his field was reflected in the enormous amount of cards, letters and phone calls he received prior to his death. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Juanita; sons, Alexander and Christopher (Libby); grandchildren, Lynsey, Lloyd, and Lesley Furuta; sister, Christina (Richard, Dr.) Boye; niece, Amity Boye; nephew, Sandford Boye and family of Ponce Inlet, Florida; and his loving cat, Venus, whom he fed shrimp to daily. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cat Welfare, 741 Wetmore Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43214 and PBJ Connections, a non -profit equine based mental health treatment program, located at 9734 Jug Street Road NW, Pataskala, Ohio, 43062. According to Bill's wishes, he had chosen cremation and with a service at a later date. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL. Dr. Furuta was MY Dr. for a few years. When I told him I lived at Apple Valley, He laughed & shared a story with ME! While He was driving up 71N one bright sunny day while listening to music, Dr. Furuta missed his exit to get off the highway. He kept on traveling; after awhile he realized he had gone too far north. He turned around to head the correct way. Dr. F was always very optimistic (in my eyes). He told me what wonderful country & blue skies & I was listening to music...just past the exit.

Dr Furuta, I will miss you so very much. Our conversations were always meaningful yet light hearted because knew that is what I needed. You would happily share bits and glimpses of your beautiful family with me...the passions for real estate in German Village and yes even ...Koi. We chatted about our boys... mine and yours. We talked business and politics and went through 2 Presidential Elections together. You always greeted me with a smile, even when I knew you were feeling so poorly. You thought of your patients first. It has been my honor and my pleasure to have known you. I wish Peace to you and to all of those who have crossed your path. Your Journey has been great! To your Family; Thank you for sharing Dr.Furuta with us. His shoulders always carried much weight and his heart, much love.
God BlessYou All!

Dr. Furuta has been my doctor for 20 years. He was there for me as a friend, a life coach and a professional liaison. He built an incredible practice based on helping people. I cannot believe he is gone. He was one of a kind; there are no words.

Doctor Furuta was the best and will be so missed. I have been associated with his practice for 10 years. My life was improved because of his help to me neurologically. He always complimented me on my progress and warm toward me. Smiled and had that "wit". Gentle spirit and kind.

My thoughts turn toward his wife and family and I pray for them.

God will bless him abundantly for his dedication and care of his patients.

I am very sad over this. He was my doctor since July and he literally saved my life by giving me a correct diagnosis. He was so caring and I wish I would have been able to tell him how much of a positive impact he had on me. I had suffered for 30+ years and he cured my mental illness and I will forever be grateful - Nissa

Our prayers & thoughts are with the Furuta family. Dr.Furuta has been our son's psychiatrist for over 10 years and in that time we learned Dr Furuta loved his family very much and enjoyed the time he had with his grandchildren. He and our son would talk horses and animals. Dr. Furuta was a kind, quietly firm and good humored psychiatrist. He is already missed by his patients, truly a remarkable man.

With our regards, the Szabo Family
