Charlie and I were good friends from the time we both started our careers at General Mills in July of 1966. At the very end of my career, Charlie was President of the company and I was a senior VP reporting to him and that's how it should have been . We had a good time during those two some years because we knew each other so well and trusted each other. Charlie was a very bright, honest executive, and had great integrity. After he retired and moved away from Minnesota we didn't see each other that often but when he came to Edina, MN to visit son Drew and his family, he often called and we would meet somewhere to have a cup of coffee to catch up. Charlie, I think about you often...peace be with you.

I'm very saddened to learn of Charlie's passing. Our friendship initiated all the way back to old Highland Junior High and Atherton High School from which we both graduated in 1958. Charlie's career path is no surprise -- as he was one of the most talented individuals I have ever known. Our paths didn't cross much after he went to Dartmouth and I to Vanderbilt. But I frequently was made aware of his remarkable career and life.
It was one of my distinct honors to have known Charlie in the 'early years' and my deepest sympathies go out to his family who weren't around when Charlie and I were teenagers -- be assured 'family' -- he was as uniquely talented THEN as he later proved to the world.
