Mather "Matt" Marvin Monroe, 86 passed away peacefully on June 26, 2014 with his loving family by his side. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Born February 6, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia, Matt was the only child of the late Mather Marvin Monroe and Ollie Brendle Monroe.
Matt attended West Fulton High School. His early years were spent working at his family's grocery store with his parents until his fathers death. Matt enjoyed a successful 46 year career in the dairy business at many locations throughout the southeast. He retired as the General Manager for Flav-O-Rich dairies in Durham.
Matt was an avid sports fan, enjoyed traveling, good food, working in his yard, and most importantly spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Gladys "Bobbie" Shuler Monroe; daughter, Melonie of Holly Springs, NC; sons, David and wife, Tammy of Morganton, NC, Jeff and wife, Penny of Charlotte NC, and Michael of Cary, NC; Grandchildren, Michelle and husband Clint, Melissa and husband Will, Jackie and husband Phil, Blaire and Zachary; great grandchildren Kristen, Kaitlin, Maddy, Whitney, and Lilly.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to St. Judes Children Hospital, Transitions LifeCare formerly known as Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607, or a charity of your choice.
