("Dr. Chuck,"), died Dec. 11, 2016, at the age of 88, in Santa Barbara, California.
He was born May 31, 1927, to Sylvia and Dr. Louis Mendelson, in Springfield, Ohio. His parents were dedicated to helping their extended families and the community.
Chuck graduated from Culver Military Academy and Ohio Wesleyan University before earning his MD at Ohio State University. He went on to work as a dermatologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Syntex Corp in Palo Alto, and in private practice in San Francisco.
After retiring, he moved to Paso Robles and then Santa Barbara, where he lived happily at Valle Verde for the past 13 years. Chuck was proud of his work as a founder of the Santa Barbara City College Memory Care Program.
He loved being with people, procuring the perfect food, liberal politics, college sports, a bargain, and live Dixieland jazz. He hated social injustice, racial inequality and under-toasted English muffins.
He is survived by his three children: Michael, Joan, (Dan Stober) and Susan Fogal (Tim); grandchildren Kate, Andrew and Rachel Stober; and Benjamin and Adam Fogal, 2 great-grandchildren and brother-in-law Millard Cummins. He was predeceased by his sister Dione Cummins of Columbus, Ohio and Aventura, Florida.
A memorial service will be held Jan.15, 2016 at Valle Verde. For information, contact Joan Mendelson at [email protected].

One of the best times of my life was working as Dr. Mendelson´s assistant in his dermatologist practice at 450 Sutter Building in San Francisco in the seventies! He started out creating so many wonderful skin creams for Syntex and then went back to medical school to become a dermatologist! Such a wonderful sense of humor and a very caring and warm person! He used to make us the best homemade dill pickles! A very big loss to the community!!!

I met Chuck outside Whole Foods. he was struggling to place his groceries in his vehicle. He allowed me to help when I offered. We chatted a moment and laughed much. When I came out from my shopping a message was on my car asking if he could call me & did I enjoy concerts. Offering "references upon request." He made me smile for days! I am sorry to find out he passed soon after. Wat a delightful human being.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time. Your dad and I reconnected a few years ago and had wonderful conversations about our past and how lucky we both felt to have known each other. He was truly a wonderful man. May God bless you all. Tracey
