Vincent "Vinny" Anthony Mazzetta of New Haven died Sunday October 14, 2018 at Branford Hills Health Care Center. He was the beloved husband of JoAnn Giannotti Mazzetta. Vinny was born in New Haven on February 4, 1935. He was the son of the late James "Tex" and Ellen Mazzetta. He lived in Morris Cove all his life. He was a musician since the age of 16, playing the saxophone and clarinet. He played all around the greater New Haven area for 65 years as a member of the 3 Guys and a Gal and for 25 years as a member of the Top Hatters. He was involved with the Five Satins and played the saxophone on the original recording of "In the Still of the Night." Vinny spent much of his working life in the grocery business and also served in the U. S. Army Reserves for 6 years. After retiring, he continued to play music in local convalescent homes with a group called the "Misfits." He was a communicant of St. Bernadette Church, where he served as a collector, sang in the choir, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Rodrigo Council 44. Besides his wife of nearly 60 years, JoAnn, Vinny is survived by his children, Vincent (Kim) Mazzetta, Jr of East Haven, Richard Mazzetta of Woodland Hills, CA, and Lorraine (Alfred) Brigante of East Haven; his granddaughters, Erica and Carlee Brigante; step-grandchildren, Marissa, Nicholas and Donald Izzo; daughter-in-law Deborah Mazzetta, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Thursday evening from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford. Worked with Vinny at the Westport Grand Union. Always ready with a story or joke, Vinny always seemed happy. He loved his family more than anything. I will cherish his memory.

I had the great pleasure (and honor) of working with Vinny. He was a wonderful man, full of humor and always had a way of making me smile. He'd told me his story of the recording of "In The Still of the Nite" with the Five Satins (only 4 of them were there!), in such a way that I, as a fan of the recording process itself, as opposed to singing/songwriting, found amazing! Although I never had the pleasure of hearing Vinny perform live, I had the great honor of just working with him and talking with him in a regular day-to-day working environment. The pleasure (I'm sure) was all mine. Thank you, Vinny - just for being you.

I had Vinny Mazzetta on my doowop radio show at the University of New Haven some years ago. He told stories about the bands he played with and his part in one of the greatest oldies of all time "In The Still Of The Night" by the Five Satins. He recalled good memories as he played saxophone for the Five Satins on "In The Still of The Night" He was very enthusiastic about his music and an all around good guy! Rest In Peace Vinny!

Hi Joann & Family,
Vinny was a fantastic person. The picture along side this note is perfect. This how he will be remembered by us. He made us feel happy just to be in his presence.
As you know,Vinnie was a Great Musician. When he played in the still of the night at St.Bernadette's Hall on his saxophone, my wife said, he blew the roof off the place with a long standing ovation. I was standing next to him and I never experienced anything like that before or since.
Vinnie will be missed by all who know him. We are better people for knowing him.
Sincerely,
Mary & Ralph Cannici

We had a wonderful vacation with Vinny and family in Texas. In The Still Of The Night was always my favorite song long before I had the pleasure of meeting the artist. It's a small and wonderful world. Thanks for the memories. Pete & Marcy
