Lloyd Moseley Ayer, 88, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and formerly of Hamden, Connecticut died peacefully on November 5, 2018 after a long period of declining health.
Born on November 10, 1929 in Cazenovia, New York and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Ermon and Doris (Moseley) Ayer. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Betty (Munro) in 2006. She was his high school sweetheart and the love of his life.
Lloyd graduated from Hamden Hall Country Day School, Class of 1947 and then from Yale University, Class of 1951 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. A member of the Navy ROTC program he went on to serve as a Naval Officer for three years during the Korean War.
After the war, he worked for MB Manufacturing Company and eventually took over management of High Precision, Incorporated from his parents where he served as its President until his retirement in 1998. A holder of numerous patents, Lloyd was an expert in clutches and torque limiters.
Lloyd was deeply committed to the Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the Vestry and as Senior Warden at Grace Episcopal Church, Hamden and then Christ Episcopal Church, Bethany. While at Christ Episcopal Church, he completed a four year program in Education for Ministry sponsored by The University of the South School of Theology. His spiritual quest was a lifelong avocation that he pursued until his final moments.
For over 24 years, Lloyd worked as a tutor, trainer and board member of Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven. His contributions improved the lives of hundreds of students and encouraged the growth of hundreds more tutors. In 2002 he received an award for volunteerism from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven.
Lloyd is survived by sons Glenn and wife Margaret of Hamden, Connecticut, and Kylle and wife Donna of Southington, Connecticut, daughters Holly and husband Terence Malloy of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Heidi and husband Charles Yanavich of New Hartford, Connecticut, sister Anita McCoy of Greensboro, Georgia, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend calling hours at Hawley Lincoln Funeral Home on Whitney Avenue, New Haven on Friday, November 9th between the hours of 5 and 7. A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Bethany at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th. Interment will be in the spring.
