Ethel Candaras Obituary

CANDARAS - Ethel, 81, died at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA on Tuesday, May 13, 2003. Beloved wife of the late Speros Candaras, of Mitilini, Greece. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 28, 1921 to Walter and Mary Andrews of County Cork, Ireland. Raised in New York City, she worked for the United States Army at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, during World War II, loading war material onto ships heading for the European theater. In 1946, she married Speros Candaras, who has served in the United States Army in the European and Mediterranean theaters from 1942-1945. Mrs. Candaras, her husband, and two children moved to Teaneck, NJ, in 1951, where she resided until 1993, when she relocated to Wilbraham, MA. During her years in Teaneck, she served as a poll worker for the Board of Elections and was a member and officer of the Teaneck Branch of the Bergen County AARP. She is survived by her daughter, State Representative Gale D. Candaras and son-in-law, Professor Arthur D. Wolf, of Wilbraham; her son, Evanggelos Candaras of Oakland, NJ; her grandchildren Evan and Jason; her sister, Helen Asselta; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Arrangements from the Volk-Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Avenue, Teaneck, NJ (201)836-0202. Visiting, Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A service will take place on Saturday at 9:30 AM in the funeral home with burial to follow at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wilbraham Nature and Cultural Center, P.O. Box 874, Wilbraham, MA.
