STANLEY COHEN Obituary

COHEN--Stanley M. Stanley M. Cohen, 86, of Chevy Chase, MD, passed away on April 20 after a brave battle against COVID-19. Husband of the late Barbara (Abrams) and Sue Ducat; brother of Annie Sher (Joe); father of Rachel (Jonathan Dinman), Lissa Shorr (Andrew), Norman (Karina Gaige) and Hannah. Grandfather of Robert and Brian Shorr, Bailey and Chloe Dinman, and Eli and William Cohen. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick to the late Harry and Mary Cohen, Stan lived in New York, Montreal, and, since the late 1970's, the Washington, DC area. He was proud of his three careers: as a teacher in the New York and Montreal school systems; a reporter, editorial writer and Associate Editor at the Montreal Star; and, for more than 40 years, regulations quality officer at the US Department of Education. Stan served on boards of several community organizations, including as a lifetime board member of Adas Israel Congregation. Beloved by family and friends, he touched the lives of many with his warmth, humor and compassion. Services private. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington's COVID-19 Emergency Fund or to the charity of your choice. Stan & I met roughly 65 years ago, when he was a graduate assistant in NYU's Journalism Department & I worked on the undergrad newspaper. We kept in touch over the decades, welcoming in the new year on many celebratory eves. The last time was this past December. Despite physical difficulties, Stan on that evening was the same genuine, warm hearted, & bright mensch I'd always known, and will always remember. My heart goes out to Sue, Hannah, & the rest of the family. Larry Barrett

Stan was a Mensch and a mentor who taught many attorneys at the U.S. Dept. of Education--like me--how to write difficult legal material more clearly and intelligibly. He as a gentleman, an excellent conversationalist, and a friend.
He is already missed. John Mason

Dear Sue and the Cohen family,
My heartfelt condolences to you. When Sue hired me at Washington Week all those years ago, it was a delight getting to know Stan. I will always remember his genial spirit and great humor in our control room every Friday night. The last time I saw Sue and Stan was at the JCC Everything But the Turkey event a few years ago...and Stan was his usual kind, cheerful self. Thinking of you at this sad, awful time of loss.

My late father, Neville, loved Sue and Stan and spoke fondly of them always. May Stan's memory be a blessing for all who knew and loved him. I hope Dad welcomed him with suitable applause to the next life xxxxx

Fond memories from Monticello Avenue and the Isaac Frank Library. Loved his wisdom especially in that signature voice. His memory is a blessing.

For those who didn't know... Stanley and his late wife Barbara were part of the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre in Montreal. One of his memorable roles was playing the editor of the newspaper in the play A Bintele Brief .... when he left he took a little bit of "us" with him....
