Charlie,
You were wonderful and special. Thank you. And John M. McGowan's death notice is very splendid.

"Charlie" Winans was a master teacher among master teachers. His presence filled the classroom. At play practice it filled the theater. Whether it was at Prep, or Brooklyn College, or Upstate or Henri's Restaurant, he "civilized" the young beasts of Brooklyn. He gave us so much. Love of Literature. Love of History. Love of learning. Being in his class was enjoyment. As a young teacher I tried to emulate him. Impossible task: no one could approximate his genius. I had to find my own voice. But I thank "Charlie" and all the great teachers at Prep for setting a standard of excellence for me to live up to. So long, "Charlie". You are in my store of fond memories.

Charles, you were the first high school teacher I ever met, and what an impression you left on me. You proctored my entrance exam at Loyola--an imperious, thunderous presence in the already nerved-up room. Despite my jitters, I found myself wondering what subject you taught; as a budding writer, I hoped it was English. When I asked you a question about the exam in a tremulous voice, I saw kindliness in your gaze even as you blustered a response. That night I told my mom, "I met this incredible teacher today...now I really want to go to Loyola." And so I did...and since that time, have benefited enormously from your tutelage and friendship. Truly, you shaped my destiny. Now, my own daughter is the same age I was when I met you, and Charles, you would be so proud of her passion for classical Greece...your legacy continues. I'd say 'Godspeed,' but you're already there, dear friend.

Charlie! You finally made it! I'm sure you and the Lord are sharing a bottle right now as I write this. Thanks for everything. I'm a teacher today because of you. All my love, and, of course, cheers.
