Dear Mrs Dean and family. It was with great sadness we heard of John's death. We have very good memories of him, though we only met him twice. He was a welcoming and warm man, who valued and cherished his family. On his trip to The University of Limerick, Ireland, where we met and conversed with him, we immediately understood him as a principled and honourable man and his record of service to the USA and the world speaks for itself. He made a difference.
However I know it is the difference and love he brought to your lives, that you now mourn. I can only add a beautiful Irish expression ...." Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal" ( may his noble soul rest at God's right hand).
Jane and Jack Fitzgibbon.

To the Dean family - I was a Spec/4 at XXIV Corps in DaNang, 70' 71, while my Dean was at the consulate. I set up the daily briefing room for the generals and other military and civilian attendees. Mr. Dean was always approachable, friendly and kind to this kid of 22. He always made me feel of value and I have never forgotten his kindness. Peace to you and know what a difference he made to the many human kind he touched.

Dear Mrs. Dean and Family:
I am so sorry for your loss. Ambassador Dean was a very accomplished American with decades of extraordinary service to our nation- but as importantly in my mind he was a wise, thoughtful and kind man with sincere moral convictions who was a great role model to me and who really made a difference in my life as a 21 year old especially through our conversations (where he treated me as an equal in some of our long discussions and encouraged me on my dreams of serving in the US Senate some day but told me to go to law school for sure) and even gracious invitations for tennis doubles and lunch with Embassy staff, which made me feel as if someone really cared in a place where I really knew no one - and where he had no obligations to me.
I arrived in New Delhi on a Rotary Fellowship about a month after graduating from Harvard College in June of 1986. I knew not a soul in India when I landed - but was told by Professor John Kenneth Galbraith (John Kennedy's ambassador) a few months before that as soon as I arrived I should check in at our US Embassy and introduce myself to Ambassador Dean.
I did - and during the nine months of my travel around India, where I gave speeches around the country about why I thought the US and India had a lot more in common than India and the USSR ( he especially enjoyed my vociferous anti-communist statements) , I showed up on my bicycle at the Embassy very regularly when I was in town and enjoyed his wisdom, his wonderful sense of humor and his great willingness to give a little advice to a young man without judgment and to listen to what was on my mind.

I cried when I was leaving India in April 1987 because I knew how good this man had been to me when I saw him for the last time in his office - and he shook my hand firmly as always, told me never to give up on my dreams and wished me good luck.
I cried again today when I read the Times and found and read his obit in the Times.
God rest his soul. Peace to you.

Dear Mrs. Dean
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Dean's passing. One of my favorite memories of living in Laos was being friends with Paul, and coming to your house as Paul's guest for a meal or two. It was always a special occasion because Mr. Dean and you were so welcoming. We have added John Dean to our prayers this evening, and to all of your family, to give you comfort during this time. He touched many people in his life with his goodness. God Bless. Lloyd [email protected]

Mrs. Dean, please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Ambassador Dean. I was privileged to know and work for him in Bangkok, however short a period of time that was in his distinguished life. Knowing the both of you was a pleasure.
With best regards,

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
