Joseph J. Dowd

DOWD--Joseph J., 80, of Brooklyn, Remsenburg, and Hutchinson Island, died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Saturday, October 6, at his home in Remsenburg, New York. Beloved husband of the late Margaret E. Dowd. Loving grandfather of Michael, Patrick, and Daniel McConnell. Revered friend and mentor of John and Susan McConnell, Patrick and Helen McConnell. Former United States Marine, graduate of New York University and St. John's Law School; teacher, Assistant Corporation Counsel, Member of the New York State Assembly (1960-1970), Civil Court Judge (1971-1980), and New York State Supreme Court Justice (1981-2004). Rising from humble beginnings, by virtue of outstanding character and unimpeachable integrity, he served as a leading member of the political and legal community of Kings County for more than four decades. Wise, compassionate, possessed of gentle humor and quiet strength, his life was an honor and a blessing generously shared. Repose at Follet and Werner Funeral Home, Westhampton Beach, New York on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Westhampton Beach, on Thursday at 10am. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. Vincent's Services, 66 Boerum Place, Brooklyn, NY 11201. A celebration of the lives of Joseph and Margaret Dowd will be held in Brooklyn shortly, at a time and place to be announced.
