As I get older I try to connect with my past so I looked Maria up and saw this notice. I was about 14 when I met Maria at her aunt's house in West Islip where she visited for the summer and we became fast friends, for me "puppy love". She called heself "Sandy". We stayed in touch, she took me out for my 16th birthday...dinner at Foffe's restaurant and to the movie version of West Side Story. Maria also came to my homecoming weekend at Wilkes College. Unfortunately we lost touch over the years and ran into each other later in life as we both worked in NYC and met for lunch. Then as always, life pulled us apart again. Maria was a beautiful girl (woman), a sweet soul and a wonderful person and was lost at an age far too young. My prayers go out to her entire family.

CousinMaria (although we called her Mia when we were young) was intelligent, successful and a compassionate lady. When my mother, Maria's Aunt, passed we lost touch as we each raised our family and were involved in our careers. Sorry that I did not hear of her illness and eventual passing until much later.

Ten years. It is hard to imagine but she was wonderful and smart and gorgeous. Greatly loved by her family and friends, and long missed.

I added a photo of Maria when she was very young. She is my cousin and although I lived in Europe she was the closest relative I had by far literally; we were parted by thousands of miles. I only saw the side of her that was so filled with fun curiosity and humanity. She came to London often where I lived for many years and she took me to places I didn't even know existed. She was a great tourist. When a girlfriend dumped me (many yrs ago now of course) she happened to be in London at the time and saw me through this wretched period. I loved her she was simply the best.

Maria was always beautiful from the word dot

Thanks for your kind words. Maria was a very good friend of mine, and many others. She was well loved by friends near and far, old and new. Judi Francis ([email protected])

Maria was a good friend of mine at Bishop McDonnell High. She invited me to sleep overs with other friends. I knew she was a superstar. I feel proud of her accomplishments. Something made me look her up and I was sorry to find that she has passed. She was sweet, kind and brilliant. I cherish the times we had together. She lives on in my memories forever.

We met on The Rotterdam when we were 13. Maria was traveling with Aunt Mary and I with my family. Soon after her mom died and we spent almost every weekend together either at her home in Brooklyn or mine in NJ. We lost touch o and off for many years. We had just reunited again when she was diagnosed. I wanted to come out to Brookyn to help but she said she'd rather set for lunch...until she was unable and then she withdrew back to "her" world. I have loved her and will always love her! Rona Jacobs Wosk

Lesley, you were missed yesterday but Maria knew you were there for her, as you were during all the time you knew her and, especially, when she needed you most, in Houston. Take care of your mom, who was Maria's dear, dear roommate and surrogate sister these many years. We all feel the same way- we have lost a great, good, loving and beautiful friend and our hearts are broken.

My thoughts are with Tori and Ken today. Maria and my mother, Beth, were college roommates, and best friends ever since. Maria and I spent 2 weeks together in Houston just the two of us learning not only about the treatment she would undergo, but also about each other. The two weeks were spent having numerous tests done, scans, X-rays, in this difficult time we stayed side by side, holding hands, but Maria never once complained or made a fuss. She woke up every morning with determination to keep fighting, and she did, she fought for a long time. I feel so very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend the time in Houston with Maria. Maria will be missed by each person who's heart she touched, but she will not be forgotten, that I can assure you, I love you so much Maria, you will always be a part of my heart.
