HAROLD SALMANOWITZ Obituary

SALMANOWITZ--Harold, 92, at Naples, Florida, previously from Scarsdale and Armonk, NY. Born May 31, 1922 in New York City to Jules and Rachel Goldberg Salmanowitz, Harold grew up in Manhattan, Scarsdale and Geneva, Switzerland, attending Fieldston School and College Calvin before becoming a member of the 1944 class of Dartmouth College. Serving in WWII, Harold was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for courage, heroism and devotion to duty in reviving and rescuing his tail gunner after their B-29 received a direct flak hit that opened a gaping hole in the fuselage during a bombing run over Kyushu, Japan. After the war, Harold (Bushy) married Betty Pollack of Brooklyn and went to work for Superintendence Company (now known as SGS) -- the world leader in inspection, verification, testing and certification -- founded by his father Jules and uncle Jacques Salmanowitz. After three years at the worldwide headquarters in Geneva, he returned to Superintendence Company in New York in 1948 and became its President in 1968. Harold moved to Naples, Florida in 1992 and with Betty (who predeceased him in 2005) traveled the world, enjoyed playing bridge and tennis, listened to Sunday Jazz Brunch and discovered country music and became an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is survived by his four children: Barbara Fassbind (widow of Alois) of Geneva, Switzerland; Richard (Elisabeth) of Jerusalem, Israel; John (Kathy) of Menlo Park, CA and David (Wipada) of Bangkok, Thailand. He is also survived by six grandchildren who knew him as Poppy - Rebecca, Joshua, Michael, Jennifer, Rachel and Natalie - and 10 great-grandchildren as well as his 100 year old sister Violet Klosty. Between his navigation on commercial flights, marginal notations correcting Goren's bridge manual and his love of options trading, he was a man with a system that was clearly his own. We will all fondly remember him for his kindness, even temper, quirkiness and being himself.

Debbie and I were so sad to hear of Bushy's passing. We had too few occasions to get to know him, but remember him fondly. We feel that we knew him very well through the stories his son David lovingly shared with us these many years.
