ROBERT ZIMMER Obituary

ZIMMER--Robert "Bob" Elkin

It is with great sorrow that we lost our kind and loving husband, father and grandfather Robert "Bob" Elkin Zimmer of Greenwich, CT on September 6, 2017. He died peacefully at home surrounded by those he loved at the age of 93. Bob was born in New York City to Jesse and Alfred Zimmer. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School before being drafted into the Army Air Force in 1943 where he held the rank of First Lieutenant. As a B-24 navigator Bob flew 13 missions and was shot down over Vienna, Austria, was missing in action and then held in Germany as a prisoner of war for nine months until the end of the war. The strength, dignity, and fortitude he showed in Germany remained with him throughout his life. After the war, Bob graduated from Columbia University and began his career as a mens and boys clothing retailer with Robert Hall. He then started his own manufacturing company Royalad Apparel which he later expanded into Zimco Industries. In 1973 Bob and his son co-founded The Mens Wearhouse in Houston, TX. He was married for 42 years to Lynn Selig Zimmer, was father to George Zimmer, James Zimmer and Laurie Zimmer Ekstein (Rudi), stepfather to Joan Nevin (John), grandfather to Sarah, Kai, Kami and the late Matt Zimmer, Courtney, Jayde and Trystan Zimmer, Jessica Ekstein, and Lucy, Caroline and Abigail Nevin. His brother, Colonel Arnold Zimmer predeceased him as did his first wife Marian Trosk Zimmer. Bob was an avid golfer and sports fan who loved dancing, Broadway music, traveling and will be remembered for his generosity to the many charitable causes he supported - especially in Rancho Mirage, CA where he and Lynn enjoyed 27 seasons with their many friends. Bob will be missed by all who knew him. The service will be held on September 8 at 11am, Temple Emanu-El in Rye, NY. Donations may be made to Greenwich Hospital in his memory. www.coxeandgraziano.com

Dear Lynn and extended family: Joyce joins me in expressing our most sincere condolences to you all.
Having worked with you at the Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic for many years, and knowing first-hand of your most generous dedication and support, and the years you and Bob so enjoyed the music, we trust the memories of those happy times, and many more, will continue to give you joy during these difficult days. May your faith give you a peace which passes our understanding.
Love and blessings,
Joyce and Joe Stein

Dear Lynn:

I am so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I have know Bob and the family my entire life as my parents were good friends. Both my Father and Bob were childhood friends, and both were P.O.W.s in Germany. I worked for Bob one summer when he opened a factory outlet named Marbert in Bridgeport, Ct. In addition, he was a client of mine for years in my P.A.W. hedge fund. I will always have fond memories of Bob.

My best wishes.
