Mimi Weisbord Obituary

1935 - 2020
Mimi Weisbord, artist, teacher, author, and radio producer passed peacefully Saturday, May 2. With the support of her caregivers, Weisbord was serenaded for her last hour by her children and grandchildren via FaceTime. She tested positive for Covid-19, but her cause of death was unrelated. She was 84.

Weisbord earned a BFA from the University of Illinois and a Max Beckmann fellowship to the Brooklyn Museum. In 1958, her self-portrait, "Woman in Black," was reproduced in the Sunday New York Times four months before her departure via steamship for the American Academy in Rome with then-new husband (and Rome Prize recipient) Lennart Anderson. The passions she pursued in Europe grew stronger throughout her life, for literature, languages, travel, theater, food and, most of all, painting.

She was an early member of the Prince Street Gallery. The dollhouse-themed canvases of her first show were reproduced in Joan Larkin's book of poetry, Housework (Out & Out Books, 1975). Larkin recalls Weisbord's influence, "Her fierce ardor for making others see what she saw, whether in a work of art or a woman's psychology, ignited a revolution in my life and work."

In the early 70s, she produced feminist programming for WBAI-FM. Her award-winning "The Blood-Jet is Poetry: the Life and Work of Sylvia Plath'' unearthed recordings, bringing Plath's voice to US airwaves for the first time. She went on to invite readings from the emerging poets Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Robin Morgan and Verandah Porche, among others.

Weisbord taught art at CUNY's City College for 17 years. She had a residency at PS1 in Queens long before it was associated with MOMA and several more at Producción Gráfica in Patzcuáro, Michoacán. In 1978 she bought raw industrial space in SoHo, sanded the floors herself, and helped form City Studios Co-op of "Artists Living and Working," where she did just that for over 40 years.

Her paintings offer penetrating commentary on domestic life. They include still lifes in watercolor or oil, house portraits, and sculptural pieces. In 1981, Thomas Hoving interviewed her for ABC Nightly News as a pioneer in the artistic use of the color XEROX machine. She created outsized works inspired by vintage linoleum and wallpaper. Additional phases saw her bookbinding (for which she won a CAPS grant from the New York State Council on the Arts), scene painting, planning city murals, printmaking, and building with synthetic clay. "About the House," her solo show at Gallery 107 in Brooklyn was reviewed in Art in America in 1996.

In recent years, she transitioned from romantic landscapes to capturing "random acts of still life" -- street-level industrial scenes -- her way of grieving her neighborhood's perpetual chaos and transformations.

She is survived by her son Orrin Anderson, daughter Eliza Anderson, and turtle of 52 years, Brownie.

Her cousin Dotty Attie (a founder of the A.I.R. Gallery) notes, "Mimi always seemed naturally to be several steps ahead of almost everyone else, simply by following her passions, never by looking for the next big thing."

Mimi loved to read- even at family functions she would often find an 'alone' spot and read a book she had brought with her. I believe her readings helped inspire her in her many wonderful artistic pursuits. So happy that Mimi is together through eternity with her husband, parents and, now, her beloved brother Marvin. You, Mimi, live on through your many beautiful artistic works.

My husband, daughter and I had the pleasure of meeting Mimi at a yoga camp in Quebec some years back. We had offered to drive her to Montreal and she was sweet enough to give us a book on asthma she’d found helpful in hopes it would help with our young daughter. I was just going through some papers when I came across postcards of her artwork she’d given us then. As I admired them I thought I’d look up the gallery when I saw the obituary and felt sadness at how fleeting time can be. While we only met her only briefly she left such an impression as a beautiful talented soul I felt compelled to add our condolences. Love and prayers, Eileen, Karl and Chantal

In the mid ‘50s Mimi and I were friends at the University of Illinois at Urbana and then when she was living on Riverside Drive in NYC while I was a graduate student at Columbia. She was a wonderful friend whose smiling face and subtle humor remain in my memory. After 65 years I believed I could reconnect with Mimi, only to be saddened by her obituary. Dear Mimi, please Rest In Peace. You are treasured in my thoughts.

I met Mimi when I lived in NYC from 2010-2016, I was so lucky to consider Mimi my friend, she was one of the kindest people I ever met, with a sharp vision of culture and art. I wish I could have more time to spend talking to her about all the amazing things she knew. I will always remember my moments with her and Irv as some of my dearest memories of my stay in New York City. My love from Chile to her family.

Mimi, the best drawing teacher, a neighbor, friend, best friend, family. Although we were more than 30 years apart you were one of my best friends in nyc. I learned from you about feminism, art, life and motherhood. Your passions for travel, books, politics and art was contagious. Visitis to the Metropolitan Museum with you were a treasure, so much knowledge attention to details and love for art... visiting you in your house in Mexico was unforgettable. But most of all are our talks in the cafe in either Ceci Cela, or cafe jitan in soho. Coming to your loft and watching together the sopranos (while Irv is telling us they were psychopats...) celebrating the holidays together. Rest in peace mimi. I miss you very much, much love Dafna Shalom
