Edward Caldwell Smith, age 64, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Cincinnati, OH on August 24, 1961, to Shirley (Caldwell) Smith and the late Edward Townsley Smith. As a child, Edward’s family relocated to Springfield, Illinois, for his father’s career.
Edward was a lifelong Catholic and pro-life advocate. He spent his career as a geologist for the Illinois State Geological Survey at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, before retiring to his hometown of Cincinnati a few years ago. Subsequently, Edward enjoyed working with local youth and sharing his knowledge as a tutor, school volunteer, and naturalist for the Great Parks of Hamilton County, as well as a volunteer for the ATP at the Cincinnati Open, in Mason, OH. He was a lifelong history buff, nature enthusiast and, along with his devoted mother, a patron of the fine arts. Edward was especially known for his sharp wit, generous spirit and desire to help others.
He is survived by his loving mother, Shirley Caldwell Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Edward is preceded in death by his father, Edward Townsley Smith.
A visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Church of the Nativity of Our Lord, 5935 Pandora Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45213. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial of cremated remains will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery at a later date.
