THATCHER BROWN Obituary

BROWN--Thatcher. The Department of Musical Instruments of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourns the passing of Thatcher "Tim" Magoun Brown III, longtime supporter of the department and founding member of The Amati: Friends of Musical Instruments. Tim's great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Adams Brown, was a founder of The Met's instrument collection and gave an initial gift of instruments in 1889, which eventually totaled more than 3,600 instruments by her death in 1918. Tim's great-grandfather, John Crosby Brown, was a Met Trustee from 1895-1909. The family has continued its support of the Museum ever since and Tim's wife, Sally B. Brown, currently serves as co-Chair of the Visiting Committee to the Department of Musical Instruments. Among their many generous contributions, Tim and Sally supported acquisitions to supplement the collection started by Mrs. Brown, and they were major donors to the recent renovation of the Musical Instruments Galleries. Admired for his ability to mix a cocktail and his deftness on the dance floor, Tim will be greatly missed by our community. We send our deepest condolences to Sally and to their three children, Geoffrey, Thatcher, and Eliza, who continue in their family's long tradition of supporting the collection of musical instruments. Tim Brown was one of the kindest and most loving and loyal people I have ever known. He was a gentleman and a scholar, a wonderful friend, a great scrap book keeper and story teller.

He loved his bride Sally and his family beyond measure. He and Sally have been a shining example of unconditional love and commitment.

And they have also been a guiding force in my life since they hired me as their Assistant Innkeeper at The Barrows House in Dorset VT. I learned so much from them and met my husband Tim there too. Tim Brown took a bit of credit for our marriage and he deserved it.

I never would have imagined my first employers out of college would become dear life long friends.

Tim and Sally introduced me to The Vineyard Theatre, suggesting I apply for a job there a couple of short years after they helped plan part of our wedding weekend in Vermont.

Whether Tim was working in the office, behind the bar or at the grill at the inn, or taking the staff to cut down Christmas trees, or giving a toast at our wedding, or coming to a show or an event, or welcoming us into their home, he was always so genuine, warm and welcoming. He always looked dapper and had a twinkle in his eye.

I will treasure all of the memories we have together and will forever be grateful for knowing and loving Tim Brown.

You will be so missed by so many dear Tim. I know you will be watching over Sally and your beautiful family and all those you love.

Good night sweet prince. And flight of angels sing thee to thy rest. ❤
