Mark Hershberger Obituary

Mark Christopher Hershberger, 24, was born February 4, 1986, in Midland, Texas, and passed away August 26, 2010. He attended Lee High School, during which time he worked in the sports department of the Midland Reporter Telegram. In 2006, he graduated from UTPB with two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry. Upon graduation, he was awarded a DAAD Fellowship and worked in Erlangen, Germany, as a research chemist and instructor. The summer of 2007, he served an internship with Biospherics in Annapolis, Maryland, as a research chemist. He attended Texas A&M University as a graduate student and instructor in chemistry and then returned to Midland to work as a chemist in the petroleum industry, first at Champion Technologies and most recently at Catalyst Oilfield Services.

He enjoyed world travel with his brother and best friend, James, and had visited England, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Morocco, Korea, Japan, China, and his favorite place, Iceland. He was a certified scuba diver and was learning to fly airplanes from his good friend, Bill Johnson. He rarely missed a Texas Tech football game with his dad and the two traveled across the United States visiting Presidential libraries. He tutored many students in math and science through the years, but his favorite student was his sister, Michelle. He loved history and politics and enjoyed working in political campaigns. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Steve and Peggy, one brother, James, one sister, Michelle, all of Midland; grandmother, Dottie Lee, uncles John Hershberger and Charley Hershberger, aunt Cyndi Donohue, and cousin Carrie, all of Dallas; Uncle Jim and Aunt Martha Williams, of Anthony, Texas; Uncle Mike and Aunt Jamie Williams, cousins Elizabeth and Zachary, of El Paso, Texas. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Margaret and Kenneth Williams of El Paso, Texas.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Midland. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 30, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Tim Walker, FUMC, and Pastor Bill Johnson of First Baptist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Midland Classical Academy, 5711 Whitman Drive, Midland, 79705.

Hershberger family, I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of getting to know Mark at Alamo! He had an incredible ability to make people laugh. I think so often about the time he cut his hair in that upside-down bowl in high school. It was so funny!!! May the Lord ease the hurt in your heart as Mark rests with our Father and Savior.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Mark when he was in the 6th grade. I was his teacher and I have never forgotten his sweet smile. He always found the humor in everything. I know he will be missed by everyone that had the honor of knowing him. I will keep you in my prayers during this time.

I Met Mark last year when we interviewed for a chance to travel to Thailand. He was SO funny and really made me feel comfortable. I only spent one afternoon with him, but I am grateful I met such a nice person. He had such a big heart and was truly interested in what was going on around him, and that is hard to come by. I am so sorry for your loss, and will keep your family in my prayers.

People ask me how we knew Mark, and I tell them that our family grew up with the Hershberger family. Karen tells people that her life was made richer by Mark coming into it. You did a wonderful job raising him. What a great kid and brilliant young man.

Mark was without question one of the smartest people I ever knew. I told him that when I was 40 and he was in the 7th grade. I never stopped feeling that way.

Some of the funnest times we ever had was when we shared time together, your family and ours. Thank you for sharing your family.

We pray each day for your healing.

I only met Mark Twice, once when I went to Odessa and again when he came to Fresno. It only took those short periods to have left a lasting impression that I will always remember. Thank You for giving the world the blessing that was Mark.
