John Hofmeyer Obituary

FAYETTE - John W. D. Hofmeyer, 95, of Fayette died peacefully Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 1 at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette with Rev. Mike Jager officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette with military rites provided by American Legion Post #339 of Fayette.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette and for one hour preceding the service on Saturday. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the church conducted by Masonic Lodge # 69 of West Union.
Memorials may be made in his name to the Shrine Hospital for Children in Chicago or the Permanent Endowment Fund at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette is assisting John's family. Online condolences may be left at www.beckermilnesrettig.com.
John William Doris, son of John, Jr. and Dora (Neimeyer) Hofmeyer was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Orange City, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. John received his education in the Christian School in Orange City prior to graduating from the Northwestern Academy in 1939.
John served honorably in the United States Navy from May 22, 1943 through May 11, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He was stationed in New London, Connecticut at the main Atlantic Submarine Station. On Sept. 11, 1948, he was united in marriage with Elma Grace Muller at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines.
John would continue his education at Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in 1953. In May of 1954, the couple would move to Fayette, and John would begin his law practice at Hofmeyer & Anthony Law Firm. He practiced for almost sixty years, retiring in 2013.
John was very active in the Fayette Community. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #339 of Fayette, Fayette Lions Club, dual member of Masonic Lodges, Masonic Lodge #69 of West Union and Masonic Lodge #374 of Oelwein, Board of Directors at Maynard Savings Bank in Maynard for many years, Elkader Barber Shop Chorus, Board of Trustees of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church (where he served as president for five years), and the Vintage Auto Club of El Kahir Shrine and Greeters Unit of El Kahir Shrine. He enjoyed playing cards, was a master gardener, and was an avid collector of antique cars.
John is survived by his two sons, John W., III and his wife, Janet Hofmeyer, of Oelwein and Richard Hofmeyer of Fayette; four grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Heath Curtis of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Joy and her husband, Christopher Koopmans of Elmhurst, Illinois, Jeanette Hofmeyer and husband, Gustavo Martinez Miguez of Exton, Pennsylvania, and John W., IV and his wife, Brooke, PharmD. Hofmeyer of Iowa City; six great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Alexis, and Finnigan Koopmans, and Benjamin, Jonathan, and Nathanael Martinez Hofmeyer; two sisters, Henrietta (George) Tamminga of Lombard, Illinois and Joan Bonnema of Orange City; and eight nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elma who died Feb. 18, 2010; two sisters, who died in infancy; and one brother-in-law, Marlyn Bonnema.
