            Services for Paul D. Hofmeyer, age 74, of Sanborn, who passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.  His celebration of life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Paul Dale Hofmeyer, the son of Eugene and Eunice (Haag) Hofmeyer was born on March 4, 1950, in Sheldon, Iowa.  When Paul was two years old, his mother, who was a nurse, contracted polio and passed away, leaving Eugene with Paul and his older sister Phyllis to raise.  Grandma Martha Hofmeyer moved in to assist the young family.  When Paul was 5, Eugene married Jeneva (Korver) Van Wyk, and Paul gained a new mother and two new brothers, Gary and Mike.

Paul began his education at Lynn Township #1 country schoolhouse.  When the country school was closed, he completed his education in Sheldon.  Sister Michelle joined the family a week before Paul’s 18th birthday.

 

Paul worked on the farm, helping bale hay, walk beans, and all the other jobs that farm life entailed.  He took special pride in doing all of the lawn mowing on the farm with his Gravely lawn mower.  He later moved to a small house in Sheldon where he enjoyed his motorcycle, snowmobile, and his pride and joy – the white and green Cobra 2 Mustang.  He spent countless hours keeping everything that he owned polished and in perfect working order.  Paul also loved his music and spent a lot of time listening to his stereo system and finding albums and tapes.  Paul branched out to work for Bernie Roetman, laying tile, and was one of the best clean-up men ever for Marv Van Riesen.  These opportunities, and the love and friendship of those who knew Paul were a delight in his life.  Paul spent many winters visiting his sister Phyllis and her family in Arizona.  There, he also put a lot of energy into proving what a hard worker he was.  He always wanted to help out wherever he was needed.  Paul found a love for the reptiles, snakes, and other creatures which continued all his life.

 

Paul later moved to Spectra Health System in Storm Lake.   This was a transition for him, but he adapted and grew.  He also discovered his favorite new store – Walmart.  In 2008, Paul moved to Sioux City.  He thrived in this environment.  He went to work at his Day Program each day and assisted on several community service projects.  He received the “Volunteer of the Year” award several times.  He loved the staff who cared for him and they loved him too.  

 

In 2022, Paul’s mobility declined, and he moved to Prairie View in Sanborn.  He again worked his charm there, and became very attached to many of the nurses, staff, and residents.  He loved coloring pictures for everyone, and talking about his beloved San Francisco 49ers, Golden State Warriors, and sharing his music and movie favorites.  

 

Paul will be remembered for his hard-working nature, his orderliness, his favorite things – the 49ers, the Warriors, Yamaha everything, Ford Mustangs, and pepperoni pizza.

He loved his family and cherished every visit and every photo, card, or letter he ever received.  He displayed these proudly in his home.  His first words were always to ask about everyone in your family to check on how they were doing.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Left to cherish Paul’s memory are his two sisters; Phyllis (Roger) Smit, and Michelle (Jeff) DeKok; his two brothers, Gary (Dona) Hofmeyer, and Mike (Bonnie) Hofmeyer; along with many nephews, nieces, and friends.
