Bess,
Please accept my sympathy and regret with the recent loss of Frank; always "Mr. Lockhart" to me. He had a guiding hand in my youth, through the church and through his gracious acceptance of the trials and tribulations that Shawn and I cooked up, on and off the farm. God bless you and your family, may he rest in peace.

Uncle Frank's cheerfulness and warm smile will be remembered forever. He was a pleasure to know and I always felt welcome in his presence. May God reward him as he so richly deserves.

In Loving Remembrance of Uncle Frank Lockhart
The name Frank stands for being "free, honest and sincere." His name fit him like a glove. He lived up to all of those attributes. Frank was an honest, sincere, well respected family man. He chose the freedom of being self-employed in the time-honored profession of dairy farming. Yes, Uncle Frank cared for this microcosm of nature under God's rule. In my eyes, Uncle Frank was the "salt of the earth" joyfully devoting his heart to the hard work of nurturing the land and the animals in his care. Uncle Frank would get that squinty crinkle in his eye and his big smile when he excitedly shared his stories. Especially the stories about the many calves he helped deliver into this world. And as humble as he was, he looked pleased when I said he should receive an honorary Veterinary degree with all his experience over the years. And I meant it! To this day, because of Uncle Frank, my love for cows goes so deep that I have not eaten animal meat in nearly 30 years. But I love fresh diary products.
Even in the origin of his sir name, Lockhart, we see the synchronistic link with farming, one of the oldest and most noble professions. You have probably heard that the name Lockhart is Scottish and actually derives from German roots of a personal name created from the words loc ‘lock’, + ‘hardy’ meaning ‘brave’ and ‘strong’. Lockhart also has English origins as an occupational name for a herdsman in charge of a sheep or cattlefold, and derives from Old English loc for ‘enclosure’ and hierde ‘herd(er)’. The Americanized pronunciation became: Luckhardt. Frank Lockhart was one of the finest examples of a brave and strong man. His work with and against the forces of nature throughout his 60 years, as a productive dairy farmer, was no easy feat.
Frank was my Uncle. Uncle in Latin refers to special kinship like a "little grandfather." Uncle Frank always welcomed us with a warm smile. I remember as a child our parents would take me and my siblings on long afternoon drives down to Uncle Frank and Aunt Bess' magical Farm. The place I frequently memorialize today when I speak of it 32 years after I moved to the city of Los Angeles, the concrete jungle on the west coast. During these visits to the farm, Uncle Frank provided stability and the link to the family history in Canal Fulton, sharing stories of our grandparents and the old ways. Uncle Frank led by example. I learned from him by "what was said" and "what was not said" when we gathered together at the farm, in their kitchen and livingroom:
1. to remember your roots
2. to be hard working
3. to be kind and loving to animals and children
4. to respect nature
5. to have joy in your heart
Uncle Frank was an amazing man in my view. He set an example that makes me proud to be his kin. He helped instill in me the strong work ethic that led to the successes I enjoy today. The cherished memories of Uncle Frank and my love for him and his family will be alive in my heart as long as it beats. It would not surprise me in the least to find out that Uncle Frank is not resting at all, but already up working in the golden fields of Heaven…

Uncle Frank always had a smile for anyone who stopped by to visit. He fought a hard battle against cancer and finally won the fight by going to heaven. May God be with Aunt Bess and the family through this time of sorrow.
