Michael Kelley Obituary

Michael 'Mike' Kevin Kelley
Feb. 25, 1959 - Oct. 11, 2020
The world lost a one-of-a-kind, brilliant, funny, loving, competitive and generous man Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020. Michael "Mike" Kevin Kelley passed away after a heroic 22-month battle with advanced cancer. His favorite movie was "It's a Wonderful Life," and those who love him saw many parallels between Mike and Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey.
He was born Feb. 25, 1959, the cherished youngest child of Dick and Darlene Kelley's four children. He grew up in Spokane, Wash., and graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1977. He received his bachelor's degree in political science and history from Carroll College in Montana in 1981. At Carroll he was student body president, a four-year starter and leading scorer on the Saints basketball team, and a Rhodes Scholar finalist. He was inducted into the Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. After college Mike attended Notre Dame Law School, earning his J.D. in 1984.
At Notre Dame Mike met his lifelong love and partner, Laurie Cuffe, when they both worked as graduate assistants in ND's athletic department. He held three jobs simultaneously while attending law school full time. He was self-made and understood the value of hard work – an experience that shaped him, as later in life he helped others who struggled. After graduation, Mike moved to Portland to practice law at Lindsay Hart Neil and Weigler. Laurie went back home to Tampa, Fla., to start her career with Arthur Andersen Consulting. Before long, Laurie requested and was granted a transfer to Portland. By fall 1984, Laurie was working for Andersen in Portland – fortuitously – in the same building as Mike's law firm.
Mike and Laurie were married in 1985 and spent the next 35 years together building a wonderful life, filled with many new friends and a growing family that eventually would include four of the most amazing children ever – Ross, Erin, Catherine and Caroline. Adding to Mike's joy came son-in-law, Alex Hortsch in 2016, twin granddaughters, Hattie and Eloise in 2018 and baby Olive Hortsch in 2020. Mike was looking forward to celebrating Ross's wedding to Katie Craven this year. Mike was incredibly proud of how close knit his family is. Three of his and Laurie's four adult children live on the same block in Southwest Portland.
Though Mike was not a fan of talking about work, he had a stellar legal career. Mike left Lindsay Hart in 1988 to help found a law firm that eventually would bear his name, Haglund Kelley LLP. During more than three decades, Mike was an outstanding trial lawyer who was repeatedly recognized as one of Oregon's Super Lawyers. In 2003, he was one of two lawyers who earned the largest antitrust verdict in the history of the Pacific Northwest, a $79 million verdict against Weyerhaeuser. State attorneys general in Washington and Oregon deputized Mike as a special assistant attorney several times. In these major cases, Mike helped achieve the largest oil spill settlement in Washington history and two of the largest antitrust recoveries for Oregonians in two complex price-fixing cases. A key contributor to these results was Mike's one-of-a-kind sense of strategy in settlement negotiations.
Despite a demanding career and busy family, Mike always made time for others. He chaired the boards of Jesuit High School and De La Salle North Catholic and served on the board of Lifeworks NW. He helped start the Jesuit High School Foundation Board, serving for a dozen years. He was always available to help others in need. Daughter Erin recalled a time when she and Mike went into a Subway store, and the man working there exclaimed, "I know what you did! Thank you!" When they got to the car, Erin asked Mike to explain. Mike had learned the man was unable to pay the fees required for his son to play soccer, so he quietly took care of it. In recent days, more of these stories of quiet service to others have emerged.
His greatest love was his family, and he was closely involved in his children's lives. Mike coached more than 30 sports teams for his children over the years – basketball, soccer, baseball and T-ball. He rarely missed any of his children's athletic competitions, dance recitals, speech tournaments or plays. He loved driving the kids to school, playing games, getting to know their friends and advising them on life. He had a soft spot for Christmas, babies and anyone who needed support, especially children.
His sense of humor and timing were well known. Friends and relatives spent many evenings of hospitality, laughter and fun in the Kelley home, where no one's glass was ever empty.
Mike is survived by his wife of 35 years, Laurie Cuffe Kelley; their children and greatest gifts, Ross (Katie Craven), Erin (Alex Hortsch), Catherine and Caroline; as well as granddaughters, Eloise, Harriet and Olive Hortsch; sisters, Gay Hart (Bob Scanlan) and Colleen O'Kelley; and 20 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Darlene and Dick Kelley; brother, Bob Kelley; and nephew, Reid Hart.
Our family would like to thank the amazing team at Providence Cancer Institute for their care during the past 22 months. Special thanks go to his incredible doctor and researcher, Dr. Rom Leidner, as well as Drs. Marka Crittenden, Walter Urba, Bryan Bell, Eric Tran, and Brian Piening. We are indebted to the teams on the 11th floor of the Franz Cancer Center, as well as the nurses, CNAs and other caregivers on 7N. Thank you – we will never forget the way you cared for Mike and our family.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private, invitation-only service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020. Mass and remembrances can be viewed on YouTube at: https://tinyurl.com/MikeKelleyService
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Providence Cancer Institute, Jesuit High School Tuition Assistance Fund, De La Salle North Catholic Basketball Program or Carroll College. Links to all of these can be found at
https://providencefoundations.org/in-memory-of-mike-kelley/
The Kelley family hopes others will be inspired by Mike's generosity and kindness. Mike would have brushed aside these accolades. But like George Bailey at the end of the movie, Mike understood that a person's true wealth was the love and respect of others. To his wife, kids, family, friends and colleagues, Mike Kelley truly was the richest man in town.

I met Mike at Carroll college PE Center, out of the blue, I had no idea who he was, just a guy in the gym. He sought me out, collecting some players. He treated me like a friend. I always remembered that and wish I woulda got to know him beyond that day in the gym.

I was one of Mike´s oldest friends from St. Charles. He was a one of a kind person, and a great athlete. I learned a lot from him about being a good competitor and a good friend. I´m sorry we didn´t get in touch after school.

I just found out that Mike died. I was one of his political science teachers at Carroll College and I too am a Notre Dame grad. About 20 years ago I called Mike and we had a wonderful conversation and I was happy he had the same sense of humor and sharp intelligence that I knew back at Carroll College. I am not surprised that his legal successes were so great. He told me about how close he came to getting that Rhodes scholarship which he certainly deserved. He will always be a very special person in my memory.

Sorry to recently find out about Mike's passing. Lost touch over the years, but had many good card games, concerts, basketball and wedding events in relationship to Carroll College. Mike and I were groomsmen in Mike Shea's weeding in which I saw a picture in a remembrance slide show.

Cancer is a horrible thing that touches so many. Rest in peace my friend. John (Post) Lampert and Mimi Crandall Lampert

Though I never met Mike, I wish I had. It is people like Mike that make our nation special. Mike gave of himself never asking for anything in return. He is a role model for us all. May God bless Mike and his family.

My condolences to all of Mike’s family. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike at Carroll College. I was a couple of years ahead of Mike. My first encounter with Mike was at the PE Center. I was shooting baskets and the only one in the gym when Mike came in. We introduced each other, shot around for a bit and then Mike asked me if I would like to play a game of one-on-one. Always looking for a little competition I gladly agreed. I was not nearly as talented a round baller as Mike so needless to say the game was very one sided. I don’t ever remember seeing someone with quicker hands; every time I put the ball on the floor Mike was there to take it away. While we did not become close we did maintain a friendly, casual relationship for the next couple of years. I really enjoyed watching Mike play ball, so smooth and boy could he shoot! I was sad to learn of his illness a while back when another fellow CC grad and close friend of Mike’s, Steve Doran told me of his cancer. I was not surprised to learn of all Mike’s accomplishments most importantly of which was his family. Rest in Peace.

Hello to the whole Kelley Family,
I was so saddened to hear about Michael's passing. I have known the family since 1st grade at St. Charles when Gay and I met and became dear friends (and still are). Michael and my sister, Mary Theresa, went to school together, and he even took her to her senior prom. Over the years, I would hear about Michael from Gay.
But, as I listened to the service today, it was so touching to hear about what a fine man, husband and father he became. What a loss for everyone! I am thinking of you all, and holding you in my heart and prayers.

Mike made incredible contributions that kept our school moving forward. My prayers to Laurie and the family and may the grace of God's healing presence be with you all in the days ahead.

I am so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. I just watched his memorial & I see how rich a life he's lived beyond his life in Spokane; I am not surprised, of course! It is so sad to hear that such a wonderful person has been taken... Ross, his son, exemplified Michael! He was gracious enough to be my escort to my Sr Prom, an AlL Girl HS! I'm sure he wasn't thrilled to say "yes" but I was blessed to have that experience. Today, I work as a Dietitian in Oncology; if I knew he was struggling or in his last days I so wished to say thank-you & good-bye! I always assumed there would be a chance to tell him! You are ALL in my thoughts & prayers!

Thank you so much for sharing the service on You Tube. It meant a lot to me to see how Michael's life unfolded. I went to St. Charles School with Michael from grades 1-8. His smiling face is a strong part of my school memories. I live and have taught the last 30 years in Petersburg, AK, but my 10 brothers and sisters still live in Spokane as well as my 93 year old mom, Elaine O'Connor. I will share Michael's story with them. What a "Wonderful Life" he lead and an inspiration to me. Hold your memories close. He will always be with you.

Its really hard to think that uncle michael has passed, there are too many memories with him to pick out just one, the amount of joy and love he had was infectious, the way he could capture the room with his stories. You will be missed dearly. Thank you for being an amazing uncle and helping create such an amazing childhood.

I have so many fond memories of hooping with Mike and Ross at the Rosenbaum house. You learn a lot about people by how they compete- Mike was a good teammate, supportive, humble despite his obvious talent, and above all fun to play with- and his pride in coaching Ross was always evident. I never met the rest of the family but feeling all of your loss. May his memory be a blessing.

Sincere condolences to the Kelly family over your devastating loss. Didn’t know Mike past graduation from Gonzaga back in ‘77 though our paths must have come close with my family connected both to Providence and De La Salle in Portland. Mike never had a negative comment about anything over the years we spent growing up in Spokane. I remember mike as a competitive athlete and loyal student and friend. Class of ‘77 Is forever united over our brotherhood and through our Jesuit upbringing. Prayers to Laurie and your family. Father of all, we pray to you for Mike and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

The Gram family will miss Mike terrible. He always had a kind smile and willing ear; inclusively asking about Pat, Andy and Anne as well as Chris. Mike was so loyal to Notre Dame, it was difficult for him to acknowledge Oregon. Finally an invite to him and Ross from Chris and I got him to Autzen. After about 30 minutes, he looked at me with his smile and said "you're right, this is the real deal!"
Mike, you were the real deal.

Mike always had time for a driveway visit and always inquired about our family. One could not ask for a better neighbor. My daughter Meg once came home from her daily visits to the Kelley home and declared that "Mike was wearing pants." She had never seen him in anything but shorts. This casual, but serious, man was a great friend and mentor to her and the many other kids who are lucky enough to be part of the Kelley family.
