Robert Ponder Obituary

Ponder, Robert 60, of Oviedo, Florida, passed away Saturday, November 16th. He was born to the late James and Margaret Ponder, December 26, 1952, in Orange, NJ. The family moved to Atlanta, GA in 1961 where Bob attended Lakeside High School. In 1975, he moved to Central FL and managed one of the first Chick-fil-A restaurants in the region. He was married to Virginia (Ginny) Campbell in 1978 and they lived in Orlando, FL for the next 35 years. His love and knowledge of music led him to work at Record Mart while building an impressive private collection of desirable vinyl records. In 1980, he fulfilled a dream by opening one of the first used record stores in Central FL, Retro Records, which still exists today. Bob later sold that store and opened Waxtree Records. He enjoyed helping new local bands be heard by selling their music and allowing them to play in the store. His love of family, friends and music was uppermost in his life. After selling Waxtree, Bob worked for 13 years at Winn-Dixie. In addition to his wife, Ginny, Bob is survived by four children: Eric Ponder and his wife, Pam, of Gainesville, FL and their children Aiden and Sophia; Ryan Ponder and his wife, Danielle, of Orlando, FL and their children Caeden and Brennen; and Madison and Jordan Ponder of Oviedo, FL. He is also survived by his brother, Terry Ponder and sister, Barbara Ponder, of Birmingham, AL, as well as several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the giver's choice of charities. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23rd at Oviedo Presbyterian Church, 2405 Lockwood Blvd. Oviedo, FL.

Located this picture of Robert Ponder (and me Matt Adams) holding a Beatles Hey Jude Award from the Retro Record Days (circa 1982). I had been thinking about this picture after I heard about Bob's and I went straight to it after I woke up. It is probably late 1982 or early 1983 before I had a car. Music has always been a big part of my life especially The Beatles. I will always remember those Retro days & Bob.

My prayers go out to Ginny and your family. Everyone loved Bob. I first met him at Retro Records when he opened it. He knew a lot about the music biz. He will be dearly missed by all. R.I.P Bob...
