Robert Palmer Obituary

Robert, age 91, passed away on August 28, 2019. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 1, 1928. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and of Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He obtained his Ph.D. from University of Edinburgh and studied at Cambridge and Oxford. He served 3 large congregations in Santa Monica, California, Lincoln Nebraska and Naples, Florida. While in Lincoln, Nebraska, Robert was the Chaplain for the Nebraska Legislature for 23 years, where he was a party to a seminal constitutional law case, Marsh v. Chambers (1983), in which the Supreme Court of the United States found that the opening of Nebraska's legislative sessions with a prayer did not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Robert also served 11 interim congregations in retirement, for a total of 56 years of ministry, and published 6 books. His wife, Mary Lou, and his oldest son, Robert, predeceased him. He leaves behind 3 children, Richard Mark Palmer, Randall Scott Palmer, and Rebecca L. Palmer, and 10 grandchildren. His funeral and a celebration of his beautiful life will be at 4:00 on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church of Orlando, 142 E. Jackson Street, Orlando, FL. A celebration reception will follow.

I was this family's nanny the summer of 1970. The Palmer family was so much fun. I was only 16 years old at the time. I had 4 children to watch, Robert 14, Richard 11, Randy 5 and Becky 9 months old. I had the top bunk and shared a room with 5 year old Randy. They had a Siamese cat that I would wake up to every morning, chewing on my hair. Lots and lots of excitement and nothing was ever boring living with this loving and lovely family. Dr. Palmer married us in 1974 at the church he was ministering, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. RIP Dr. Palmer, I always wondered where you and your family went☺

I first met Bob Palmer and his family in 1962 when he was auditioning to be pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a fabulous speaker and was a wonderful pastor at Westminster for 25 years. He was certainly kind hearted and a great inspiration to many people. I already knew his wife, Mary Lou had passed and was sorry to hear his son Robert had passed. May God in heaven be with you and your family forever and ever.

Dr. Bob was a great comforter to so many people and we enjoyed a wonderful peace from his prayers.

Dr Palmer married my husband and myself May 29,1965, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. We were at the reception given by the church when he moved to Lincoln from California.. Dr Palmer baptized our daughter Michelle Renee' Ward in 1967.
Over the years and of course today after reading of his passing, we speak of him fondly

We had our premarital counseling with him and remember many answers to our questions and words of wisdom and guidance he gave us. I'm sorry you've lost your loved one he was a admirable man and lived a long life. I was sorry to hear he lost his wife and son. I was surprised the funeral would be in Orlando, Fl. We moved here 30 years ago I wondered if he ever gave sermons here, I would have loved to be there

May God bless you and give you strength at this time.
