Family-Placed Funeral Notice

ARDIS WAKE ORR Ardis Wake Orr, 74, a long-time former resident of West Palm Beach, passed away on Monday evening, December 13th in Bowie, Maryland. Ardis taught in the Palm Beach County School System for 27 years. She was highly regarded by her students and their parents as well as by her peers. During the years she lived in West Palm Beach, she was a member of Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church. She was a very active member of the Palm Beach County Teacher's Association, and was appointed by Governor Claude Kirk to serve on the Governor's Commission on Teacher Education. Ardis was a charter member of both Zeta Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Society, Inc. and the West Palm Beach Links, Inc. She was also a member of the Gardenia Literary Society, The Young Women's Civic League and the Footlighters Play Acting Guild. After retiring and moving to Landover, Maryland, Ardis continued her volunteer activities with sick babies and children at Children's Hospital, Washington Hospital Center, and served as a volunteer at Rogers Heights Elementary School. Until her illness, she enjoyed the companionship of her friends at the Glenarden Senior Center. Ardis leaves behind to celebrate her rich legacy of community service, dedication to family and life-long devotion to providing quality education, her children, Eric (Julia), GA, Pamela McKenzie (Edward), MD and Tracye, DC; four grandchildren, Maya, NY, Michelle, DC, Joshua Orr, GA and Lauren McKenzie, MD; three sisters, Wilma (Shedrick), FL, Marjorie (Hubert), FL and Athea (Robert), FL; one brother, Alexander (Marjorie), CA; many nieces and nephews; loving daughter-in-law, Dr. Lavdena Orr, DC; mother-in-law, Eula Orr, MD; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wake, NJ, Juanita and Virginia Orr, MD and a host of friends both in Maryland and West Palm Beach, FL. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and fondly remembered by her colleagues and fellow volunteers. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 20 at Largo Community Church, Mitchellville, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Largo Community Church Youth Education Building Fund, 1701 Enterprise Road, Mitchellville, MD 20721.
