Betty Jameson Obituary

Betty Jameson, one of the founders of the LPGA and a Hall of Famer, died today in Boynton Beach. She was 89. "Betty loved golf and wanted nothing more than to play the game for a living," said LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens. "As a result of Betty's elegant ambition, generations of women have benefited from her dedication, vision and sacrifice. We are very sorry to lose her." Born May 9, 1919, in Norman, Okla., Jameson first appeared atop the leader board at age 13 with a Texas Publinx title in 1932. She went on to win a Southern Championship at age 15 and back-to-back U.S. Women's Amateur titles in 1939-40. She later won the 1942 Western Open for her first major title and completed her stellar amateur career with 14 victories. The blond-haired, brown-eyed Jameson turned pro in 1945 and quickly gained popularity as one of golf's first "glamour girls." Her 72-hole total of 295 at the 1947 U.S. Women's Open was the first sub-300 score ever recorded by a woman. She won her third and final major at the 1954 Western Open. She finished her career with 13 victories. Jameson joined the LPGA at its inception in 1950, when she became one of the organization's 13 founders. Jameson was inducted to the Hall of Fame of Women's Golf in 1951). She also is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame in 1991, and was recognized during the LPGA's 50th Anniversary in 2000 as one of the LPGA's top 50 players and teachers. Funeral service details are still being arranged. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The LPGA Foundation, 100 International Golf Drive, Daytona Beach, FL 32124 or First Church of Christ Scientist, 200 SE 7th Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33483.

I recall that story David told, He's My Brother, we were good neighbors and friends with Betty and Mary Lena in Delray Beach. Going to their house to "play" was like being in a dreamland for me as a kid. Betty did some fabulous art and even painted a portrait of Our Brother James. The whole family was talking last night about how much these two wonderful women had such a significant impact on our lives. We had fun and learned so much, about golf, art, and tried so many new foods at their house including collard greens, pimento cheese, ranch dressing, and black beans and rice. I loved being able to step in that large vat of wet clay Mary Lena had in the "pot shop" squishing my toes around and giggling like the girl I was. We also had many lessons on how to "throw" on the wheel. I think of You both often and even more around the holidays, it was a pleasure to have spent so many of them with You both. God Bless!

Betty was one of my best friends. She was quite a lady and great golfer. She played for the love of the game. I will miss her. She will always be with me when I look at the painting she gave me.

Although I met Ms. Jameson only briefly at the 50th anniversary LPGA celebration I want to thank her for her generosity and hard effort in making our LPGA tour what it has become in the 21st century. She and earlier pioneers gave so very much of themselves so we could all benefit and live our dreams in womens golf. From what I understand she was a genuine lady who loved life and making it better for others. Thank you Ms. Jameson for helping make my dreams a reality. Sherri Turner

Happy you found your way back to the Delray Beach Golf Club...the best munie in golfdom.... your presence for the last 15 years has meant a lot to all of us. Forgive me for putting you in assisted living and for taking away your car and its keys! And, when we meet again your 'most sincere apologies' will be graciously accepted! BTW, Mary Lena, Glenna Collett (Vare) and Tommy (Armour) are on the first tee... plenty happy that their fourth is rare'n to go... swing away... Hallelujah Bessie Mae.... keep a toe in the door as I'll be looking for arms around...and every once in a while, put brush in hand and paint our Delray sky...Hallelujah, peace at last. xxxooo

I have heard so much about Betty (Princess) through my dear friend Amie. She loved her so much and enjoyed the numerous hours they spent together. Although I never had the fortune of meeting her, I feel a true sense of loss for all who did. May she rest in peace and her memory live on forever.

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond's gift of snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the autumn's gentle rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. (Native American Poem)

Thank you for your ambition and will to be yourself, and to express yourself as an individual and pioneer in the golf world. As you pursued your dreams with gusto, you and your friends made possible every dream of every girl that will ever hold a golf club, and advanced every hope of being a lady while being fiercely competitive. My hat is off to you that while you were just being yourself, you ended up being a legend.

I own a stunning portrait of our beloved Betty. I stared at it and saw her beautiful eyes 'lasered' forward, her hands placed perfectly on the club, her posture perfect and her left arm folded neatly against her body. She was a beautiful lady dressed to perfection with a love for the game like no other.
There is and will never be anyone like Betty.
See you later Betty.

Betty Jameson, the legend, the golfer, the artist, was first and foremost, Betty Jameson the lady. Full of life, often firey and always living life to the fullest, you asked little but gave much. Women's golf has lost a pioneer; those of us who knew you have lost a friend. Rest in Peace; you now have a grip on eternity!

Betty, You are a wonderful, no-nonsense gal, and I'm so glad you and I got to know each other over the past few years. When you said, "Let's check out your swing!" I was thrilled and honored to take your instruction - our last outing was only a month ago. You brought such wonderful energy to everything you did. I'm so glad we're pals as we always will be. I'll never swing a club without thinking of you.

I was fortunate to have met Ms. Jameson once at an LPGA dinner event. I will never forget the crowd of LPGA professionals who gathered as she enthusiastically showed a young rookie in attendance "her grip". Her gentle grip with her characteristic hands was so respectfully admired by her peers. I regret not being able to see the art those hands created as well. May she rest in peace.

I am fortunate enough to have had a grip lesson from Betty in the lobby of the hotel at the celebration of the LPGA's 50th Anniversay . All it took was a Marks a lot, Betty and my hands. Everytime I use what she showed me I stripe it long and straight. Betty's enthusiasm was monumental and it caught me. Thank you Betty for creating history that I'm grateful to be a part of. You will be sorely miss.

The name Betty Jameson was the first golf professional ladies name I had ever heard as a youngster from my golf instructor, Tom Creavy, of Saratoga Spa, NY, who in his lessons would tell stories of the Golfing Greats. I was thrilled to finally meet "Legend Betty" at age 21 in 1972 when Tom introduced me to her at the Delray Beach Country Club. Thank you Betty for your vision which fueled my dreams to join the LPGA tour in 1975.

I am fortunate to have spent some time around Betty over the years here in Delray Beach. Her passion for the game of golf flowed from her. It seems like every time I hit balls around her she would always tell me to correct something in my grip. The grip was so important to her because it seems her hands were made to have a golf club in them.
Thanks for all of the great memories, and for your love of a game that you passed along to all of us.

Some of my favorite memories of Betty and Mary Lena was playing golf with them at the Par 3, Barwick Golf Club, and admiring Betty's hands on the golf club. She placed them on so softly and perfectly on the club. I've never seen anything like it, before or since. As one of the youngest members of the LPGA at the time, Betty was so wonderful and warm and watched over me (or so she thought). She shared many of her wonderful and colorful stories about the early days of the Tour. I'm hoping you and Mary Lena and Lucy are playing some wonderful golf up in heaven. I will miss you!

For several years Betty studied art from me at Palm Beach Community College. She pursued her art as diligently as she did golf and loved improving and learning. Betty and some students and I would usually go to lunch after each class and the students and I enjoyed her being with us. I never got to play golf with her although we talked about it some. I wish I could have been in her league in golf. I admired Betty and will miss her.

I knew Betty casually as I frequented the gas station that she did business with in the early 2000s. She was a charming lady with a quick witt. We always talked of her golfing days. I would go online and find things for her regarding her golfing in the day. She will be missed.

Just yesterday I saw my neighbor in his back yard hitting plastic golf balls with his son who couldn’t be more than five years old. After talking with him about our sprinklers, and acknowledging his young sons good swing, I told him that I had received my first golf club from a woman in my old neighborhood who was a professional golfer.
The next morning I read the news of Betty’s death.
I always knew Betty was a golfer, but thought of her as an artist. Her golf career had long been over when I knew her, and she was a woman who had scared me once because I didn’t take proper care of her lawn mower, and pottery wheel, while she was out of town.
She lived with “M.L.” back in those days, and the two of them left an indelible print on my upbringing. She was a woman who opened her door to us as kids, and became friends with my parents. She, and M.L. gave me that club, and the memory of hitting balls in my backyard with Betty’s encouragement, is vivid.
